About the Item
Original Aircraft Sculpture
Cast in Bronze on a mild steel base, the sculpture is patinated in a rich “Christmas Island Crab Red “ patina to emphasise the devilish nature of this work.
1st Bronze cast of the 1st “ Fork Tailed Devil " series , that being the name given to the P-38 Lightning by German pilots in WW2 as they had not seen its twin boom configuration.
A homage to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry who flew into the skies
and disappeared in a P-38 in 1944.
The twisted form of the aircraft, abstracted into a tortuous dive or perhaps a growth from the ground, straining ,desperate to free itself from earthly bonds and reach for the skies. Reminiscent of an alien relic, frozen in time ,this devil is in between the two dimensions of earth and sky.
