Boky Hackel-Ward
DAMAGED (Platinum Leaf)

About the Item

Bronze with Platinum Leaf From Boky Hackel-Ward’s Figurative Poetry Collection, this bronze was directly inspired by a poem entitled Mea Culpa taken from Paul Géraldy’s book Toi et Moi. It has been a source of inspiration for Boky for many years. While studying in Florence, she found an old, dilapidated copy of the book in a basement. It inspired a series of paintings, as well as, a series of photos entitled Le Roi est Mort. The sculpture exists in two editions, one has the excerpt of Géraldy’s poem in the interior of the female figure, while the other edition does not. Mea Culpa: "Au fond, vois-tu, mon erreur, ma grande folie c'est d'avoir chargé ton cœur de tout le poids ma vie" Which translates to: "In the end, you see my error, My greatest folly Is to have charged your heart With all the weight of my life" *Also available with Gold Leaf* 30 x 8 x 10 inches Edition size: 6 Boky Hackel-Ward is a German-born sculptor who began life as a conceptual artist, restorer of Old Master paintings, photographer, musician, writer and poet. As a conceptualist and a polyglot, language has always been extremely important in her work. Boky Hackel-Ward’s work is honest and personal, exposing her vulnerabilities to the world as a way to heal. Raw with emotion, her stance as a strong woman is untethered, yet hidden under a veil of fragility. Boky's first exhibition, "SOMEWHERE WITHIN", opens at Hilton Asmus Contemporary in Chicago in May 2019. It is the first time Boky Hackel-Ward and husband/sculptor Blake Ward will collaborate on a dual exhibition in the United States. From the artist: "Abstraction versus objectivity and an immaterial world that exists beyond the obvious….Mikhail Larionov’s words to Natalia Goncharova in 1900: “Open your eyes to your eyes” is the beginning of a tremendous love story and artistic collaboration between what would one day become a husband and wife creative entity. Each with their own road to follow yet passing through all the stages of love that culminate in the lyrical. “Open your eyes to your eyes” is a sentiment that very much mirrors our creative development and our story. Creating in the shadow of my husband work has been as painful for me, as working in the vast emptiness alone was for Blake. My work and presence completes his work. Emptiness experienced together is less onerous and is a catalyst to creativity. I exist there, by his side. My artistic development and sensibilities were formatted, not only by the institutions, but more importantly by a life lived in a conceptual world where abstraction and form have battled it out with the linguist and the philosopher and have led to an ephemeral body of work. Blake has taught me, as I have taught him. We are opening our eyes to our eyes. My new work is about the healing that occurs when we embrace love. I suppose our collaboration is a result of the love that we have for one another. From the very beginning we have always tried to teach one another and share our knowledge. We each bring different things to the table; the blogs, the sculpture techniques, the conceptual, the wax and the clay, we share this beautiful life together. Without the art we would be lost!” -Boky Hackel-Ward

Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions." Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide. "It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses. Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality. To achieve this awareness in my creative process, I go through three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition." - Flavius Pisapia
