About the Item

Glass artist Cheryl Wilson Smith’s grandmother used to create hand-stitched quilts from cut squares of fabric. This beautiful wall sculpture with its patchwork pattern, and its soft colour palette in blues, white, gray and green is a remembrance of those colourful quilts. Each wafer-thin square of glass frit (ground glass) is carefully layered into stacks. The Northern Ontario-based artist is most often inspired by the rugged natural world that surrounds her so this piece signals a subtle intimate shift. Wilson Smith’s art is always an exploration of memory and the passage of time. I envisioned—"The stacks of cut squares (my grandmother) would have ready to be made into a quilt. And the layers of memories that come with her making those quilts . Arranging and rearranging the fabrics into blocks and then the ladies all together for the quilting bees sitting around the frame. The tea and the dainties.” Cheryl Wilson Smith She was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. Wilson Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor wall. She is the recipient of the prestigious Chalmers Fellowship from the Ontario Arts Council which allowed her to work in Scotland in 2023. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US.

  • Large Flattened Form with Shards and Cane in Blues - blown glass vessel
    By Susan Rankin
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
This beautiful burnt orange vessel in blown glass takes its organic shape and wild patterns from nature. Canadian artist Susan Rankin finds inspiration in the ever-changing colours and forms in the garden she tends to all summer. “With this new series of blown vessels I am working with more transparent translucent colours, shards, glass threads and thread drawing. The resulting pieces have a history/story built into the surface, which encompass the optic qualities of glass and light.” Susan Rankin She graduated with honors from Sheridan College, Oakville Ontario, in 1989 and received a three-year artist in residency at the Harbourfront Centre glass studio. Rankin has studied glass at the Pilchuck...

  • Probability Deep Blue 4 - elegant, curved, abstract, glass, wall sculpture
    By John Paul Robinson
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
John Paul Robinson creates original contemporary wall sculptures from coloured glass that are filled with light. This piece features elegant arched deep blue tubes of glass that are polished to a smooth finish and overlap one another to create a dynamic composition. The Canadian artist often explores themes related to how the world works. This is one of a series intended to represent the dual nature of light as both a particle and a wave. In physics, the wave nature of light is referred to as a "probability wave". “The thickness of the glass and curvature of the lens conspire to create their own optical effect. As your gaze moves across the piece it causes the small grains of coloured glass to shift just a bit. Starry Starry Night...
