Dale Chihuly
Celtic Emerald Persians

2007

About the Item

The American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly is well-known for his innovative techniques for creating handblown glass sculptures. His glass practice is a departure from traditional symmetrical and perfectly formed vessels. Instead, his works embrace asymmetry and irregular shapes to create unique sculptural forms. Chihuly began his Persian series in 1986 as an experiment to search for new forms. Chihuly uses ribbed optic molds and molten glass ringed with a linear wrap to create his characteristic repetitive patterns. When blown and spun, the glass bubbles created have irregular shapes. The swirling and translucent designs allude to the ancient art of Venice and the Near and Far East. Additionally, the forms reference enchanted gardens and minarets while romanticizing notions of Orientalism. The most illustrious series in his work are Cylinders and Baskets he created in the 1970s; Macchia, Venetians, and Persians from the 1980s, Niijima Floats and Chandeliers created in the 1990s; and a more recent one, Fiori from the 2000s. Issued in 2007, this work is hand-blown glass that is incised with Dale Chihuly's (Tacoma, 1941 - ) signature: 'Chihuly'. Incised edition number on the small bowl: PP07. Manufactured by Portland Press/Chihuly Workshop.
