David Hostetler Carved Zebra Wood Sculpture Beige Contemporary Figurative Exotic

About the Item

Guardian II is carved from a single piece of zebra wood. The base is a clever find, it's a Chinese brass bowl, turned upside down and patinaed! David and I loved antique stores. The form is inspired by his research of American Indian petroglyphs. It is the first and only wood sculpture where he defined the eyes by drilling and staining the wood. Guardian II is a uniquely abstract form, absent are human like forms, hair style or dress style. He wanted to pare the form to say female without his usual female traits. The totemic form, frontal gaze contribute to a powerful sculpture- it feels much taller than it is. David loved zebra wood, the grain adds such energy to the sculpture- you want to stroke the piece. Even though I like to place sculpture where you can see all around it, Guardian II lends its self to placement in a corner, fire place mantle or side table. I really want it on a pedestal so you can see it all around!!!
