edition 4 of 5
New York based artist Devorah Sperber’s work focuses on the intersection of art, science, and technology, and their influence on the ‘art of seeing’.” Conceptually, she explores and questions visual perception; how the eyes and mind interact to decipher reality and how much of what we see is biased by what we know and what we expect to see. Sperber’s research in the science of optics merges with her interest in art history to create pixilated, three-dimensional, inverted images of well known works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Hans Holbein, Jan van Eyck, and Andy Warhol. The artist constructs these works out of hanging columns of spools of thread, which appear as colorful abstracts to the naked eye. Once viewed through the optical device, however, the work becomes immediately recognizable. Sperber deconstructs familiar images so that our brains can reconstruct them, the result being a truly convincing reproduction of the well-known painting. Devorah Sperber’s remarkable feats of artistic and perceptual achievement have been exhibited extensively across the United States and internationally.
Devorah Sperber’s installations have been commissioned and included in the permanent collections of Orlando City Hall, Orlando, FL; Vornado Realty Trust, Penn Plaza Lobby, New York, NY; Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines; Diverse Works, Houston, TX; University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis, MN; University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; Wyndham Worldwide, New York, NY; Wells Real Estate Funds, Arlington, VA; Centro Medico Train State, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Fashion 26 Hotel, New York, NY; among many other public and private collections.
