Merging Styles and Cultures, Original Contemporary Mixed Media Installation

2021

About the Item

Merging Styles and Cultures, Original Contemporary Mixed Media Installation, 2021 Digital images printed on transparency, hand-stitched Utilizing imagery from her international travels to Cambodia, India, and Italy as well as more locally-inspired photography, artist Gwen Samuels artfully collages these moments from her past and transformed them into a tangible work of art. Printed on transparency and then sewn together, these four urn-like vessels feature abstract architectural images that devolve into pure patterns when viewed from afar. Artist Commentary: This piece was re-envisioned at a later date. It was made up a series of classical urn shapes that got stronger when they were merged into stronger "totem" shapes. My vision for the work had changed and they also acquired a new title- Merging Styles and Cultures. As social media has made us closer with one world that idea was expressed in my art as well. About the Artist: Gwen’s love of textiles began early and has continued as a life-long resource. As a naive 17 year old she went off to Paris for a weekend as a Mademoiselle Magazine college competition fashion winner. Her interest in fashion continued to grow starting out as a textile designer before becoming a full time artist. The joy of pattern informed her vision from very early on. Gwen moved from the east coast to the west coast 18 years ago that had an unexpected impact. This new freedom included world travel and she began taking pictures with a camera without realizing she was creating a context for the work yet to come. Soon Gwen began re-arranging and cropping her photos and finally printing on transparencies in repeat patterns made on the computer. Her love of the handmade made the needle the natural tool to pull the pieces together leaving the threads hanging as evidence of the process. Her work is arranged slightly off the wall with straight pins to permit shadows to interact with the forms. From a distance the work appears as abstract compositions. Upon closer inspection segments carry recognizable imagery. Gwen’s work is about transformation and her interest in reconfiguring shapes and patterns in repeat on a transparent material that interacts with light to create a unique visual experience.
