About the Item
Trio of turned wood bowls by the internationally known American Sculptor, Designer and Craftsman, James L. Prestini, (1908-1993). Prestini’s masterful woodworking techniques were famous for rendering a most delicate porcelain like form, unsurpassed in the field of wood turning. The two smaller pieces appear to be birch, the largest looks to be poplar, though it may be clear birch. These are from the estate collection of noted architect, designer and collector, Larry Freels(1937-2020) who while studying design at UC Berkeley in the late 1950’s, was a student of and became acquainted with Prestini.
Similar pieces are in collections worldwide, most notably the Smithsonian in Washington D. C. as well as the Metropolitan Museum, New York, NY and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA.
