Joe Wheaton’s unique sculptural designs welded from dark, oxidized brass or brilliant silver steel showcase a contradictory set of relationships; “beautiful yet menacing, “threatening yet delicate” as described by the artist. Wheaton builds his metal compositions using a language of strokes and patterns. Geometric spears, disks and quadrangles alternate with wispy, sharp edged lines that trail off quietly to an undefined point. This visual sweep can be likened to the art of calligraphy, echoing the artist’s interest in early Asian arts and ceramics, as well as printmaking.
Artist Statement: Familiar yet strange, beautiful yet menacing, threatening yet delicate. Reaching and solid, my work traverses many contradictions. As in life, beautiful lines have sharp edges, precarious forms balance with great certainty yet are vulnerable to nature's menacing ways. I am interested in using recognizable materials and relationships in configurations that will serve to re-evaluate how one perceives what might at first seem obvious. Dark forms stand in front of their ever-changing shadows. Lines motion and engage, but are like life, elusive and mysterious.

- Motherlode (Mid-Century Modern Abstract Sculpture in White & Natural Wood)By Leon SmithLocated in Hudson, NYMid-Century Modern abstract sculpture of a white painted abstract geometric wooden object "Motherlode" by Leon Smith, c. 2007 Acrylic painted wood with wood base 10 x 9 x 2 inches This small, mid-century modern style abstract sculpture made of white painted wood is perfectly suited for a tabletop, pedestal, or mantle piece and recalls designs associated with the Post Modern movement. Curved pieces of white painted wood pair elegantly with a natural wood base. The geometric shape is able to rotate around the base, inviting interesting shadows at every angle. Artist Statement: Why I construct sculptures is somewhat of a mystery to me. I suspect, in some ways, it is a continuation of childhood play, where invention, improvisation and often a sense of mischief, are a key. The simple abstract shapes that I choose to work with give me the greatest freedom to manipulate and discover new forms without being bound by specific representational imagery. The opposing qualities of form are what engage me most. Balance vs. precariousness, stability vs. movement, and the organic vs. the inorganic. I play with these elements until another dimension appears and until the form is pleasing to me. I'm partial to the double take, the paradox, but only if the work's formal qualities con sustain interest and delight over a long period of time. About the artist: Born in Australia, it was Smith's first career as a dentist that taught him to make carvings and moldings. His sense of humor and that of his wife, Elaine, are at the epicenter of Smith's playful designs and titles. Riffing on simple, abstract shapes gives him the freedom to discover new forms and ideas. "The opposing qualities of form are what engage me most. Balance versus precariousness, stability versus movement, and the organic versus the inorganic. I'm partial to the double take, the paradox, but only if the work's formal qualities can sustain interest and delight over a long period of time. Smith's childlike energy knows no bounds, producing work that is at once amusing and sophisticated. Sure, he's 83 years old, but hold on tight when he drives you around in his golf cart...Category

- Calypso (Colorful Abstract Mid Century Modern Sculpture in Yellow, Blue & Green)By Leon SmithLocated in Hudson, NYSmall colorful abstract sculpture in mid century modern style 16 x 14 x 6 inches painted aluminum in bright yellow, sage green, cerulean blue, dark mauve purple This small, contemporary abstract sculpture made of colorfully painted aluminum is perfectly suited for a tabletop, pedestal, or mantle piece and recalls designs associated with the Mid Century Modern movement. Curved pieces of sturdy aluminum in hues of bright yellow, cerulean blue, dark purple and sage green form into a single abstract shape that exposes exciting shadows and changing angles at every perspective. This mid century modern sculpture was created by Hudson Valley base artist, Leon Smith, as a small scale version of a larger outdoor installation. Artist Statement: Why I construct sculptures is somewhat of a mystery to me. - Snakish (Curvy Abstract Minimalist Encaustic Wall Sculpture in Black and White)By Donise EnglishLocated in Hudson, NYAbstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture in black and white "Snakish II", made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 hand-stitched paper, beeswax (encaustic) and thread 36 x 10 x 3 inches hangs with a small thread notch on back extremely lightweight, weighs no more than 1.5 lbs. Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture was made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022. The playful motif of hand-stitched paper, layered with black and white acrylic paint and coated with encaustic, is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The winding segments of white and black encaustic layered paper are assembled in a curving, snake-like formation, which are then hand-sewn by the artist. The lightweight wall sculpture hangs with a small thread notch, installed by the artist on the back of the piece. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.Donise English has received numerous awards including a 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting; the Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Purchase Prize from the “11th National Juried Exhibition” at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland; 1st Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts,” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase Award for Sculpture, Del Mar College, Texas, Honorable Mention; and others. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. It has been cut, shaped, polished and "carved" with abrasives and intense heat revealing a variety of textures both on the surface and the interior. Since it's made from solid steel it is heavy for its size and has a commanding presence. The base is also solid steel. The influence for this piece was from war images of destroyed buildings but the message is for peace. Total weight of sculpture and base...Category
