Joseph Slusky
"Oga" colorful abstract sculpture

2003

About the Item

Steel and acrylic lacquer paint. Joseph Slusky's sculptures are often described as charismatic and exuberant. The liveliness of the varied shapes -- a playful mix of linear, geometric, and sinuous forms -- is expertly balanced by the use of negative space to guide your eyes to selected focal points. Likewise, the bright color palettes imbue the work with an enormous sense of fun, but the specific placement of each colorful rectangle or circle can make the eye stop at just the right spot to appreciate the work as a whole. California-based sculptor Joseph Slusky says of his work: "Beyond the more immediate historical art roots of my work from the Cubist, Constructivist and Surrealist Movements is a sensibility in which everything one encounters in the visual realm is grist for absorption and sculptural transformation... My undergraduate degree in architecture has imbued my work with architectonic and structural references. The gestural, figurative aspect of my work can be traced to competitive gymnastics throughout my high school and college... The titles of the pieces, many of which come from geographical place names, reflect the belief that each work is symbolic of a new place traveled to and discovered."

    Located in Oklahoma City, OK
John Wolfe's Mixed Media Abstract Sculpture, "Untitled Assemblage #S 3-23" brings together wood, steel, ceramic elements, and acrylic paint. The warm colors of the wood and painted ceramic elements soften the feel of the rectilinear arrangement. The shallow depth of the work gives the sculpture a kind of "drawing" quality while the shadows it casts lend a more expansive feel. The heavy, dark wood base anchors all aspects of the work in place. This work is the perfect tabletop piece. It's large enough to command attention, but also subtle in its open framework arrangement. John Wolfe was born in Vernon...
