About the Item
Coal, resin, tar, steel, acrylic, LED. 45 cm × 220 cm × 35 cm.
Counterpart II is one of Tom Price's 'hybrid' artworks sitting halfway between art and design: the piece can be seen exclusively as a sculpture or can also serve as a bench. In this artwork, dark and opaque coal is put into relation and opposition with crystalline and translucent resin. Tom Price alludes to carbon’s transformative power, which depending on its molecular structure and level of purity can take on completely different shapes and colors, from graphite or coal to diamond.

- Archimedes VortexBy Terry PoulosLocated in Chicago, ILModern-day 3-dimensional facsimile of the 1-dimensional mathematical axis spiral found in the ancient manuscript titled the "Archimedes Palimpsest." Sculpture conveys a double entendre with its proprietary version of the universe spiraling through space, evoking Archimedes’ effort to calculate the volume of the universe. The universe is depicted via the vortex spiral and globe as supercooled and superheated, a polar opposite electrical balance of nature. An armillary sphere conveys Archimedes' math treatises on the circle, sphere and cylinder. Included are one vintage pulley and corkscrew (representing the water screw), both honoring Archimedes inventions, and one valve handle.
