Florilegia: for Friends Yet to Come

About the Item

Florilegia: for Friends Yet to Come features a unique hologram with vintage glazing. C Alex Clark is known for their unique holographic pieces that merge image and material through the embedding of holograms into glass. These sculptures respond to light in the same way that an analog photograph might, forever changing in response to the environment that they're surrounded by. Moving through varied mediums and crafts including holography, digital image making, sculpture, weaving, video, installation, and performance, C Alex Clark's practice seeks to confront, challenge, and enhance modes of perception. A destabilization of strongly held perceptual beliefs can change the simplex modes of thought which are handed to us, allowing for a complex—or further, multiplex—constellation of new thought to arise. These new thought patterns can subsequently be superposed onto concepts outside of art, such as gender, economics, and other cultural and socio-political constructions which are often taken for granted.

  • Sad Woman/Distant Man
    By Holly Roberts
    Located in Santa Fe, NM
"Sad Woman/Distant Man" illustrates Holly Roberts' shift from over-painting photographs to constructing photo-based images on top of abstract paintings. By combining the precision of photography with the expression of painting, Roberts marries objectivity with subjectivity, thus paralleling the dichotomy of human experience. Like much of Roberts' contemporary work, "Sad Woman/Distant Man" is a psychoanalytic interpretation of human experience, particularly unrequited love—A woman stares longingly at a disinterested man. The couple is composed of photographs of appendages both modern and medieval in execution, alluding to the immutability of unrequited love as a motif in art and literature. The work's underlying abstract painting figuratively functions as the uninterpretable gulf between the two lovers...

Bonnie Seeman grew up in Miami, Florida with a propensity towards anatomy illustration and the dazzling colors and rich foliage of the Miami landscape. Developing her technique with porcelain and glass, Seeman channeled her inspirations; resulting in vessels that are both beautiful and macabre. Combinations of muscular and skeletal anatomy and plant forms are the makeup of these sculptural utilitarian vessels. Instead of dwelling on dying, Seeman’s palpable forms culminate in an acute awareness and awe toward life, renewal, nature, and vitality. Shortly after completing her master’s degree in Fine Arts, Seeman was recognized by Galeria OMR in Mexico City, a gallery known for its cutting-edge artists. In effect, Seeman’s porcelain was taken out of the craft context and placed in exhibitions such as ARCO in Madrid, FIAC in Paris, and Art Basel. She shows extensively throughout the United States and was recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation 2005 Biennial Competition Award.
