CoadeCoade Stone Decorative Keystone Male Head in Classical Style (18th c)
About the Item
This keystone featuring a male head is a reproduction based on an original 18th-century Coade keystone.
The original keystone was purportedly inspired by the character of Harpagon from the play "The Miser," a comedic work in five acts written by the French playwright Molière. First performed in 1668, the play was loosely based on the Latin comedy "Aulularia" by Plautus. It was subsequently adapted by Thomas Shadwell in 1672 and Henry Fielding in 1732.
The sculptors at the Coade Manufactory likely drew inspiration from the contemporary adaptations of the play, using them as a reference to create the keystone depicted in the promotional materials of that time.

Coade
Established in 2000, Coade Studio specialises in creating exquisite sculpture in classical and contemporary style using a variety of materials, namely Coade, bronze, lead, plaster, resin and terracotta. Our team of highly skilled craftsmen produce portraiture, classical ornaments and monumental figures for discerning clients. Coade stone was created in the 18th century as a remarkable new building material and was used by the eminent architects of the day. The characteristics of the material, which is actually ceramic, makes it possible to produce sculpture with the finest of detail but also durable and resistant to harsh weather. When Stephen Pettifer finished his training in Sculpting, Stone Carving, Restoration and Conservation, he was surprised to find that Coade was no longer being used as a sculptural medium and that the method had been lost over time. He set out to develop the recipe and techniques of producing Coade to the same standard as was originally used in the 18th century. Today, Coade Studio takes on commissions of classical sculpture and contemporary pieces for modern country estates, as well as carrying out restoration of historic buildings in the UK.

- "Flying to the Inside", Contemporary, Ceramic, Sculpture, Geometric PatterningBy Judith ErnstLocated in St. Louis, MOOriginally from the Northwest with a B.A. from Stanford University, I have painted, published illuminated books, and lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Now working primarily in ceramics, I draw images from the deep well of past experience, always starting from a strong “mind’s eye” vision. My ceramic pieces are as much about their inside as they are about their sculpted outside. Implied are the dichotomies between the inner and outer, between that which is hidden and that which is seen, between the esoteric and the exoteric, between the soul and the body. I continue to create “Metaphysical Pots” that feature water both inside and outside, becoming metaphorically both the Water of Life and the Infinite Ocean, symbolizing the continuous process between creation and transcendence. Other pieces include shapes that repeat in a pattern that follows the form of the vessel. It is a “bio-geometry” that leads the eye back to the inside...Category
