Workshop Benedetto Boschetti Grand Tour Marble Model Of Bath With Ferine Feet

after 1800

About the Item

A Giallo Antico (Giallo Numidia ) marble grand tour model of a bath with ferine feet standing on a squared Violet Marble two order base. The work from the workshop of Benedetto Boschetti is a typical example of grand tour production of the 19th Century . The Grand Tour was a long journey in continental Europe undertaken by the wealthy European aristocracy starting from the 18th century and intended to perfect their knowledge with departure and arrival in the same city. It had an indefinite duration and usually had Italy as its destination. During the Grand Tour, young people learned about the politics, culture, art, and antiquities of European countries. They spent their time sightseeing, studying and shopping. Italy with its legacy of ancient Rome, with its monuments, became one of the most popular places to visit. In addition to knowledge of the ancient world, the English thus came into contact with the works of Palladio in Venice and the Veneto and with Neoclassicism in Naples. During the trip the young people could purchase, according to their possibilities and means, numerous works of art and relics, and visit the ruins of Rome, but also of Pompeii and Herculaneum which had recently been rediscovered (starting from 1748). Among the most important stops on the tour were Naples and the Campi Flegrei which offered the possibility of visiting both archaeological sites and natural phenomena, such as volcanic activity. Goethe gives an example of this in his Journey to Italy.
