White Porcelain Baby Birds, Topiary Tree "Birdie Topiary" by Bethany Krull

2011

About the Item

This sculpture depicts two newborn baby birds perch atop a potted topiary hand built using super white porcelain and archival white paper mache by New York Artist Bethany Krull. The intricate detail of the porcelain bird's featherless skin is meticulously slip trailed onto the surface of the porcelain dot by dot while the beak, eyes and talons are glazed with a shiny, wet-looking glaze to contrast with the gorgeous matte texture of the unglazed porcelain. Krull sees the topiary as surrogate habitat for the creature that speaks to the dichotomy between wild and tame, interior and exterior and real and artificial.
