About the Item

Dana Widawski’s ceramic works can be compared to the form of wild thinking. She transcends genre boundaries and one-sided classifications by repeatedly creating abrupt and unforeseen combinations. Her works undermine borderlines between art and craft, between high and low, and dares to introduce elements into art that art fears the most: as if even kitsch, which with Adorno lurks in art to leap out of it on so many occasions, becomes a player in the works, as it were – goblin-like, slipping out of any classification – as a parody of catharsis. Dana Widawski, lives and works in Berlin. From 1995 to 2000, the artist studied textile design at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle / Saale (diploma) and from 2004 to 2006 Art in Context at University of Arts in Berlin (Master of Arts). In 2018 Dana Widawski was awarded the L102.ART PRIZE, in 2011 the art prize of the city of Schwabach, in 2001 the Wilhelm Lorch Foundation Prize and in 2000 the scholarship of the HKD Burg Giebichenstein. Her works were i.a. issued in: VI Art Festival Bydgoszczcz (Poland); O19 OSTRALE Biennale, Dresden; Kunstquartier Bethanien, Berlin; Gallery Mutter Fourage, Berlin; Gallery Gilla Lörcher Contemporary Art, Berlin; Gallery of the City of Schwabach, Bavaria; Arts Council of the Sparkasse [savings bank] Karlsruhe, Freies Museum Berlin; Higure 17-15 CAS, Tokyo, (Japan); danubeVIDEOARTfestival, Grein (Austria); Galerie BRAUBACHfive, Frankfurt a.M .. • Whale Fall
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
In this fully collaborative work, artists Crombach and Stern explore subject matter derived from the problematic and mythologized human relationship to the natural world. When the body of a whale sinks to the abyssal plain and forms an ecosystem, this is called a whale fall. Whale Fall (2019) consists of glazed porcelain assemblages and furniture carved into skeletal forms. Clusters of partially recognizable porcelain objects allude to both the decaying flesh of a whale and Baroque still-life painting. Whale Fall oscillates between shipwreck and whale carcass. Illuminated from within, it is an otherworldly creature in its own right; a fleshy thing in a moment of arrested decay. Nurielle Stern...

  • "Ghost of the Lotus Shoes", Contemporary, Figurative, Porcelain, Sculpture
    By Irina Zaytceva
    Located in St. Louis, MO
Irina Zaytceva was born in Moscow in 1957. She graduated from Moscow Art Institute ( Poljgrapfichesky) with an MFA in book illustration. Having illustrated a number of children books, she found porcelain by chance; a friend had given her a piece of clay, which prompted her to experiment with the new media and fell in love with it. Fine porcelain is a perfect canvas for her drawings, and with the ability to bend her “canvas,” she can add sculptural elements to the picture. Someone called this hybrid media narrative sculpture, a term Irina thinks aptly describes her work. Never formally trained in ceramics, Irina had to invent ways to handle it. Unlike many of her colleagues who paint with oil based colors, she uses water based colors and has developed her own techniques in this media. She does not use casting but hand rolls her vases, cups, and, sculptures. With every piece porcelain yields its secrets to her. Since 1998, Irina resides in USA and presently have her studio near Princeton, New Jersey. Important additional inspiration came from her family and from the family of a childhood friend, where Kristen found herself surrounded by the work of Paul Manship, her friend’s grandfather and one of America’s greatest sculptors. With increased focus on her art, along with winning numerous awards throughout high school, Newell eagerly enrolled in the arts program at University of Vermont and augmented her studies with a valuable year at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
