Daniele Fortuna
Venus Fontana - Original Sculpture

2020

About the Item

Daniele Fortuna's Venus sculpture is a captivating fusion of classical beauty and contemporary vibrancy, marrying the timeless elegance of ancient Greco-Roman art with the bold, dynamic essence of pop culture. Drawing from a wide array of influences, from high fashion and global brands to pop icons, Fortuna’s work brings the ancient world to life through a modern lens. This unique piece features hand-cut and painted wooden layers that reconstruct Venus with an infusion of bright, pop color, challenging the traditional perception of classical sculptures as monochrome relics. The sculpture’s base, with a deliberate cut, pays homage to Lucio Fontana's spatial concepts, adding depth and a modernist critique to the piece. Through this sculpture, Fortuna bridges eras, revitalizing the colorful reality of classical art and integrating it with contemporary narratives. Owning this piece means appreciating a profound dialogue between past and present, rendered through Fortuna’s innovative visual language. It's not just a sculpture; it's a statement of cultural synthesis and a vibrant homage to historical truth and artistic innovation.

  • Lost in reflexion
    By Guillaume Lachapelle
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
Text by Terence Sharpe There is a moment in Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972) when the character Hari commits suicide by drinking liquid oxygen. As she is not actually a human, but an artificial hybrid product of the mysterious planet and the protagonists’ memories, she heals rapidly and is alive again minutes later. Her choice to take her own life is poignant, seemingly the action of a being becoming aware of its hopeless infinitude. Her realization that while the men will die on the space station or elsewhere, her existence is that of immortality, a deeply alienating notion that causes her to seek her own destruction. The Montreal artist Guillaume Lachapelle has one work that prompts a sense of eternal alienation that echoes Hari’s tragedy. The work greets the viewer with a empty doorway flanked by clinically white bookshelves...
