About the Item
'Hope' original springstone sculpture signed by Zimbabwean artist Dudzai Mushawepwere. The sculpture uses abstraction in the human figure to capture an abstract state of mind: the sculpture presents the form of a woman merged with the form of a bird. The figure's arm reaches over their head and become a long-feathered tail. The woman's head, likewise, takes the form of a bird's head with a pointed beak. This spiritual combination of animal and human forms recalls traditional imagery from Africa and across the globe, from contemporary to paleolithic.

Dudzai was born in 1974 in Mutoko. He is the last born in a family of four. He is the younger brother of sculptor Tendai Mushawapwere. Dudzai grew up in Chitungwiza, a high-density suburb just outside Harare, where he completed his primary education. Dudzai showed early signs of artistic creativity while at school. He started his sculpting career in 1990 when he was taken on by the sculptor John Type as his assistant. He worked with John for two years sculpting contemporary visual art under his supervision and then set up on his own as a full time sculptor.
He is inspired to sculpt by his ancestors who were also artists. Through his research and interests in African culture, he found that his cultural history was becoming defunct in sculpting and he wanted to revive this art form by teaching himself as well as others. The most effective way he found to let the people of his origin know the importance of their culture was through sculpture. There he explores themes ranging from day to day activities to cultural history and visiting places of interest. Today, his sculptures can be found in galleries in Germany, Belgium, Holland, the U.K. and the U.S.

- 'Dancing in the Wind' original Shona stone sculpture by Wellington KaruruLocated in Milwaukee, WI'Dancing in the Wind' is an original opal serpentine sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Wellington Karuru. The artist presents an elegant and curvilinear figure of a woman, her hair seeming to billow upward and behind her. The sculpture is on one hand a celebration of the stone material, and on the other it calls back to art historical precedent: her body is brought to a high polish, reflecting the softness of skin, while her hair is left rough-hewn to create the effect of the untamed wind. At the same time, the woman's body is highly stylized and emphasizes her hips and belly, recalling Paleolithic "Venus" sculptures like the lauded Venus of Willendorf and thusly ideas of maternity and womanhood. opal stone (serpentine) not signed 23" high x 8" widest point x 4" smallest point, sculpture 4"x4"x4", sculpture bottom 1 x 6 x 6 inches, base Overall excellent condition with no signs of wear Sculpture comes with base. Born on August 17, 1976, Wellington Karuru is the first born to a family of five children and has two brothers and two sisters. As the first born child in a Zimbabwean family, many responsibilities were shouldered upon Wellington. Both his brothers, Gilbert and Esau, are also talented sculptors. He completed his primary and secondary education in Mashonaland West Province and was involved in almost every sporting activity at the school. After he graduated, he was employed at National Foods LTD where he worked as a machine operator for a period of four years and was later promoted to work as a sales clerk. In his free time he assisted some well known artists in sculpting, was able to learn much from them and soon thereafter started to develop his own talent and unique style. Inspired by such well known sculptors such as Gardener Sango and Garison Muchinjili, Wellington started sculpting small pieces for himself and soon found a buyer for his favorite piece titled ‘A Cry For Help’. From that day forward, he has never looked back. He eventually went to work with Garison Machinjili whose influence is clearly shown in his work. Some of his pieces have been chosen already for international exhibitions and galleries. Well established and internationally renowned artists like Joe Mutasa...Category

- "Traditional Dresser, " Opal Stone Sculpture by Shona Sculptor Washington MsonzaBy Washington MsonzaLocated in Milwaukee, WI"Traditional Dresser" is an original opal serpentine sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Washington Msonza. The sculpture features a single elegant figure in a flowing gown, standing tall and averting her gaze as she clutches the veil that envelops her. Msonza emphasizes the materiality of the work, as is so desired of artists trained in the Shona tradition, by differentiating between the dark, smooth polish of her skin and the lighter textured surface of her clothes. Even more, passages of the surface are left in the serpentine's rough natural state, allowing the green-colored stone to contrast with the red-orange oxidization of its environment. opal stone (serpentine) 37.5 x 12.5 x 13 inches signed "Msonza W" on reverse along base Overall good condition; some minor scratches, likely as the sculpture left artist's studio. Washington Msonza was born in 1966 in Domboshava where he attended primary school. He then moved to Chitungwiza to attend secondary schooling. While in school, he spent most of his time watching his brother-in-law Albert Mamvura also a sculptor, whose workshop was close to his house. In 1988 Msonza began assisting Albert full time, while simultaneously gaining experience by watching other well known artists in the area including Gedion Nyanhongo...Category
