Heidi Moller Somsen
"Witness" (Desert Pronghorn)

2020

About the Item

"Witness (Dessert Pronghorn)" by Heidi Moller Somsen, ceramic, 14 1/2 X 20 in., $2,000. The desert pronghorn are fascinating creatures, and the only large, plant-eating mammal species in America to survive the Ice Age. They have remained largely unchanged from an evolutionary standpoint for over 30,000 years. They have large eyes (the same sized eyes as an elephant) and 320 degrees of vision. Inspired and influenced by the essay, "The Council of Pronghorn" by Terry Tempest Williams, Somsen presents us with this sculpture of a remarkable creature that as a species survived catastrophic extinction events, now serving as silent witnesses to the antics of humankind, as they waver on the brink of extinction. "With these works I am speaking about our relationship with the natural world and our responsibility to the environment. I use the fragmented human figure – a bust, feet, an arm, combined with mountain forms to suggest and evoke a sense of sacrifice and the idea of “grounding” or literal connection to the earth – bare feet, touching dirt and rock, planting one’s self in the soil as a way of healing. As humans we have been on the earth a relatively short time, yet we have done significant damage. I believe there is a relationship between how we treat the earth and how we treat each other. Our physical bodies age and erode, our country is aging and eroding, and the effects are not easily reversed, but there are benefits to aging as well – wisdom, growth, spirituality. - Heidi Moller Somsen

"Vision" by Maureen O'Hara Ure, mixed media on panel with thin rusted wire, 13 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches. Relying on sturdy panel to hold up to months, sometimes years, of revisions, O'Hara Ure slowly builds up an image, obsessively laying down marks in thin, sanded layers of paint, ink, and pencil to create a uniquely smooth, almost polished texture distinctive to her style. When a panel returns to her studio from a show, she may begin to tinker with the image, perhaps first sanding out or painting over just a section. "Often as not, I keep going and start all over, using gesso to erase any memory I have of the painting." "For over fifteen years, all of my major projects have begun with my drawing overseas in museums and at historical sites. I returned to my studio and set about using some of the raw ideas in my travel sketchbooks to begin developing new work, taking liberties with the art-historical material I had collected.
