About the Item
Jessica Carroll is an Italo- American sculptor (b. 1961), member of an artistic family (her father was a painter, her mother a writer and her grandfather directed the movie Totò, Peppino e la Malafemmina). According to the own declaration she has been an all-around artist "since she was born."
Carroll is an extremely versatile artist, able to express herself through many different mediums. Essentially she is a sculptor of nature and every work by her is guided by a scientific research.
This is the case of "Equiseto": a pure and elegant piece of art worked by subtraction and addition. On a white piece of marble, Carroll has set a malachite and imprinted the mark of an ancient vegetable species, the Equisetum.
Present since the Palaeozoic Era, the Equisetum is the only living genus of the entire family Equisetidae and is classified as a "living fossil." Its distinctive feature is that it reproduces by spores rather than seeds.
Combined with the malachite, a mineral whose name comes from the Greek "malake" - meaning "mallow" as it is reminiscent of the color of the plant's leaves - Carroll's work of art resonates as an amplification of nature.

Jessica Rosalind Carroll was born in Rome in 1961. At the age of five, she began working as a "young shopkeeper" by cleaning her painter's brushes and gradually learning various techniques including etching. Since she was very young, she has dedicated herself to drawing. She has made photographic research trips to numerous parks, nature reserves and places of nature around the world from Italian parks to those in northern Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, the Pamir plateau and the Volga delta park in Turkey , Israel, Burma, India and Africa. During a long period of stay in the United States, in addition to dedicating herself to photographic research in various national parks and reserves, or sanctuaries of the Audubon company, she attended courses in drawing, photography and chalcographic techniques at the Cleveland Institute of Art and readings on biology and ethology at the Western Reserve University. Five large pencil tables on cardboard on the flora and fauna of Lake Vico are permanently exhibited in the Park Visitor Center in Caprarola (Viterbo). For about seven years she has also devoted herself to sculpture in marble, bronze, terracotta and other materials. Recently she has developed a bas-relief drawing technique with pongo. In 2000 Jessica participated in a series of group exhibitions: at the Salamon & C Gallery in Milan, at the Galleria dell'Incisione in Brescia, at the Patrizia Buonanno Gallery in Trento and at Susanna Orlando gallery in Forte dei Marmi. In December she illustrated for Fogola Editore in Turin the book of the Great Series "the Recall of the Forest" by Jack London. In April 2001 she exhibited at the castle of Rranz Paludetto and on May at the gallery La vetrina by Elisabetta Giovagnoni in Rome. In 2002 she created a Hannukia for the Museo dei Lumi of the Synagogue of Casale Monferrato. She also participated in the exhibitions "Risalto" and "Rumorosa" in Monferrato and in a group exhibition at the Gallery dell'incisione in Brescia. In 2022 her artworks have been exhibited at Selvatica festival, the most significant art and nature Italian exhibition. Curated by Lorenza Salamon.

- Dog scratching its earLocated in PARIS, FRThis amusing naturalistic sculpture in silver-plated pewter was probably made in the 17th century by Georg Schweigger. Inspired by a model created by another Nuremberg sculptor, Peter Flötner, it bears witness to the persistence during the baroque era of the naturalistic taste that emerged in the Renaissance. Intended as an ornament for some Kunstkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, this sculpture was a great success, as can be seen from the presence of similar works in many European museums. 1. Georg Schweigger Georg Schweigger was a baroque sculptor and medal founder from Nuremberg, known mainly for his small-scale works in stone, carved wood and cast metal. His only large-scale work, the Neptune Fountain, has been in the Petershof Palace, the summer residence of the Tsars near St. Petersburg, since 1797. This monumental sculpture demonstrates his taste for the representation of movement, which we find in this small piece, inspired, as we shall see, by earlier models. 2. The success of a naturalistic theme As is often the case in the history of art, the source of the Dog scratching his ear theme probably comes from an engraving, and more precisely from one made in Strasbourg in 1480 or in Aschaffenburg in 1481 by the Master of the Housebook, an anonymous engraver working in southern Germany at the end of the 15th century. This engraving seems to have been Peter Flötner’s (1490 - 1546) source of inspiration. Peter Flötner was a sculptor and engraver who settled in Nuremberg in 1522. The Louvre Museum also has a gilded lead statuette dated between 1500 and 1515 (on deposit at the Musée de L'Œuvre in Strasbourg), which in turn is thought to have served as a model for other known statuettes. This model was later taken up by the Frenchman Barthélemy Prieur...Category

- NautilusLocated in Oswestry, GBThe Nautilus shell is an excellent example of mathematics inherent within lifeforms of the natural world. As Davies consistently uses the 'golden ratio' (1:1.618) to proportion his work, he thought it important to exemplify this in his subject matter. The Fibonacci sequence (where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers) and the logarithmic spiral are also inherent here. The bronze shell is mounted on a black granite base in a way that creates an optical illusion suggesting it is levitating above the base. This bronze Nautilus...Category
