Jim Ritchie
Jim Ritchie was born in Montreal, Canada, and is known for his pastel drawings and bronze sculptures. He is stylistically linked with Cubism, abstract figurative work and modernism, and the human figure is the subject of much of his work. Ritchie had several exhibitions in Montreal before moving to the small town of Vence in Provence, where he lived and worked for over 30 years. The Adelson Galleries in New York began representing him in 1980, where he had two solo exhibitions. Over the next 30 years, Warren Adelson arranged exhibitions of his work in Boston, Los Angeles, and Art Fairs across the country. He had a 60-year career in sculpting. His son, Paul Leander-Engström, and Adelson Galleries now represent the estate.

Artist statement: My passion for sculpting is expressed in my creation of the virtual records of contemporary culture. I capture everyday objects in carved stone, using a technique I invented more than 20 years ago. At the start I mull over the food, article of clothing or particular brand I wish to replicate as historical evidence for future generations. I feel driven to duplication by carving stone of similar color – or purchasing one of neutral tones and staining it to that which I desire. I ask myself, ‘Will a bottle of Heinz ketchup...Category
