About the Item
In the bronze "Stepper II," a young woman steps forward both deliberately and with caution, entering life as she is still creating herself, gathering strength and assurance. The painterly patina accentuates the way Stewart alternates between using detailed likeness and letting features fall away: everything is resolved, but nothing concluded.
The bronze sculpture, edition #3 of 5, stands 52 inches high, and comes with the custom, 21.5 inch high steel stand as shown in the main image.
Judith Stewart completed extensive training in painting and sculpture after receiving her BFA from Syracuse University and her MFA from the University of Illinois. While teaching painting at the University of West Florida, Stewart earned a grant to study in Italy, where she began painting sculptures from antiquity. Her preoccupation with observing three-dimensional form affirmed her true interest in sculpture. After moving to Arizona in 1991, Stewart began working predominantly in wax for cast bronzes, and most recently has begun exploring the qualities of clay.
