About the Item
"Athena I" is a bonded bronze on black marble base.
edition of 50 - bronze w/ other finishes are available.
Echoing the spirit of masters of Equestrian art like Stubbs, Gericault, Bonheur and Munnings, Atlanta-native Julie Ferris brings her own contemporary style, perspective and expression to her equine portraits. Paying close attention to the formal aspects; line, color, shape, scale and composition, she creates portraits that are realistic, yet painterly. Ferris is interested in capturing the duality she sees in her subjects. “I love how the horse personifies the contrast of steel and velvet,” Ferris says, “because even though they are strong and powerful, horses also possess a gentle and soft nature.”
Her latest body of work “Good Mare” is a series of paintings that explore the equestrian saying, “there’s just nothing better than a good mare.” Female horses have a stigma that they are difficult and opinionated, but if a rider is partnered with a ‘good one,’ together they will develop an unbreakable bond and trust. Good horses are often referred to as ‘saints,’ because they are loyal, take care of their rider, forgive their mistakes and give their all. A good mare’s trust must be earned.
Ferris received a BFA in Painting with a Minor in Equine Studies from the Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, Georgia. Her work has been commissioned and collected across the United States and internationally.

- "Nimbus" - abstract sculpture - Barbara HepworthBy Susan HableLocated in Atlanta, GASusan Hable is inspired by the work of David Hockney, Milton Avery, Henri Matisse, Alex Katz, Howard Hodgkins, Hilma af Klint, Georgia O'Keeffe, Barbara Hepworth and Constantin Brâncuși. With humor and a bit of mischief, Susan Hable’s “Don't Pick The Flowers!” is a body of work that is at once a refuge and a playground. Inspired by her sumptuous garden just outside of her Athens studio, Susan flows from one medium to the next from painting to collage to sculpture. Susan sees her garden as a place for adventure and daydreaming, challenging her perceptions of what her Art can be. Even a weedy ground cover has caught Susan’s eye, an overlooked invasive is seen in a new light becoming a dreamlike fairytale path. Her work asks us to engage in life, go for a walk and play. - [Morgan Le Fey]By Hazel Brill JacksonLocated in Boston, MASigned on base: "Hazel Brill Jackson". Also with artist's monogram. In fine condition. Hazel Brill Jackson (Born December 15, 1894, in Philadelphia) spent most of her early childhood in Italy. Attending the Scuola Rosatti in Florence, Jackson enjoyed afternoons at the zoo, pursuing her favorite pastime: drawing animals. World War I forced the return of the Jackson family to the United States where they settled in Boston. Hazel spent the next four years at the Boston Museum School, where she studied with Bela Pratt and Charles Grafly. Jackson returned to Rome after the war, where she worked with Angelo Zanelli and later had her own studio. With such works as Roman Work Horse and Ned (Mussolini's favorite jumper), she began to exhibit both in Rome and Florence, and eventually became a member of the Circolo Artistico di Roma. The sculptress returned to the United States in 1935 and opened a studio in Newburgh, New York. She continued to sculpt animals, concentrating on horse and dog portraits. Jackson had one-woman shows at the Guild of Boston Artists in 1938 and in 1968. In 1945, she was awarded the Ellin P. Speyer Prize by the National Academy of Design in New York City for Play-Day and Romance (a mare and foal group) and in 1949, she won the same prize for Indian Antelope. Hazel Jackson is represented in the Brookgreen Gardens collection by The Listeners, a sculpture group of raccoons, which was placed there in 1964. Don Quixote, now at Wellesley College won Jackson the Mahonri Young...Category
