Making New Friends (medium)
Melanie was invited to participate in a sculpture exhibition in Icheon, South Korea and created the design for this sculpture. She researched the similarities in hair styles and clothing of Korean and Navajo women.
Melanie chose the color to incorporate both Korean and Navajo cultural ideas. Light blue-green with a golden hue: Green symbolizes prosperity, fresh starts and auspicious beginnings. This color is used to mark public spaces in Korea. Turquoise is a color of protection in Navajo. Gold is the color of the sun and also references corn pollen used in Navajo culture. These new friends are shown speaking from the heart.
