About the Item
Carved wooden sculpture - San Martino - Italy, early 19th century.
22 x 13 x h 40cm.
Entirely in finely carved pear wood.
Condition report: In good condition, with signs of ancient woodworm.
This small wooden statuette with elongated shapes depicts San Martin on horseback. The saint is depicted according to an iconography that became popular starting from the 18th century, especially in France. Martin of Tours (315 ca. - 397) is a Christian saint, born in Pannonia (present-day Hungary); bishop of Tours around 370 he was a preacher and founder of the first monasteries in France, as well as a staunch opponent of pagan cults. His influence extended throughout Western Europe and many churches were dedicated to him in France and England. In iconography Martin appears in episcopal vestments or dressed as a Roman soldier in the act of dividing his cloak in two with a sword. In both cases he may have a crippled beggar next to him, as happens in this example. Martino, in fact, after enlisting in the Roman army, served in Gaul. One winter day he met a beggar who was shivering from the cold, divided his cloak, or paludamentum, in two, and gave part of it to the poor man. During the night he dreamed that Christ visited him wearing the part of the cloak that he had given.
