About
This monumental bronze sculpture is cast and assembled as one large piece. It is entirely cast in bronze. Two borzoi dogs stand either side of a young lady clad in elegant early 20th century attire. The dogs are patinaed and painted in gold and red. The woman’s face has a silver overlay. The raised decoration in the dress and are painted, as are the grapes and decorations of the bronze base. The design is true to a nouveau aesthetic in its style and elegance.
The piece is not signed, yet it is obvious that it was executed by a very accomplished sculptor. Although, never weighed, the sculpture has significant weight which may approach 1000 pounds. The piece was part of a grand entrance area in a Palm Beach mansion.
Art Nouveau, a decorative style, flourished at the end of the 19th century and ran into the early 20th century both in Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, stylized, idealistic shapes with organic decoration. It was employed most often in architecture, interior design, jewelry and glass design, posters, sculpture and illustration.
