About the Item

Artist : Genevieve E. Flynn Title : Life's Struggles Teapot Materials : Brass, Silver Date : 2016 Dimensions : 8 x 4 x 6 in. Description : "This teapot was created in response to the political rhetoric that was happening in 2015/2016 and continues to this day. The idea that lower income people did not have insurance through our system was appalling to me. Today, when I look at this piece it is like finding an artifact in some archaeological dig that represents the down trodden of our society for far too many years." - Flynn "The body of this fabricated vessel is made of brass sheet. The handle has been created from a metals technique called anticlastic forming. The lid has three layers of brass "discs" and a sterling silver "loop" at the top for a finial. Silver wire circles the base. The form was a perfect teapot before I distorted it by hammering and collapsing areas. Once it was highly polished, I applied a patina to distress the surface." ONE OF A KIND. Award winning silversmith, Genevieve Flynn, has been working in precious metals for 44 years creating hollow-ware and art jewelry family heirlooms. Flynn has been invited to create numerous private commissions, including an intricately chased and engraved hand mirror that was presented to music industry personality, Paula Abdul and a commemorative 1985 World Series pin for the late Ewing Kauffman, then owner of the Kansas City Royals and Marion Laboratories. contemporary art, ceramics, contemporary ceramics, contemporary fine art, ceramic artists, sculpture, contemporary sculpture, jewelry, contemporary jewelry, jewelry art, Margaret De Patta, René Lalique, Bruce Metcalf, fine art jewelry, Suzanne Belperron, Stanley Lechtzin, Art Smith, Margret Craver, Jennifer Trask, Evert Nijland.

At their best, they’re all just tools to help you find a path through the darkness. None of them really work that well, but they help. Of them all, science seems to be the one right now. Like religion, it provides the glimmer of hope that maybe it will be all right in the end.’ (D. Hirst, quoted in conversation with S. O’Hagan in New Religion Damien Hirst, exh. cat., British Council, London, 2006, p. 5) Born in 1965 in Bristol, Hirst grew up in Leeds and subsequently went to Goldsmith's College in London. Between 1988 and 1990 he curated a series of exhibitions of work by his contemporaries including the highly acclaimed group shows Freeze, Modern Medicine and Gambler. In his own work Hirst has continually challenged the boundaries between art, science, the media and popular culture. A 12-foot tiger shark, a cow and her calf sawn in two, pharmaceutical bottles...
