"Untitled, Witness Series", Glass and Metal Wall Mounting Sculpture, Photography

2023

About the Item

Pohlman and Knowles began their collaboration in 1992. They use a variety of materials in their rich assemblages, including hot-sculpted glass, various metal works, found objects and beads, achieving a fine sense of formal balance. Three notable research field trips had a profound impact on their personal and artistic development: in 1997 they visited Zimbabwe and Botswana; returning to Africa they visited Ghana in 2000; and in 2002 they traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and East Africa. They gathered creative and emotional inspiration from these travels. These experiences are used to create sculptures that embody mythological stories in glass. Part of the narrative of the object is derived from the artists’ own travels and part by ancient cultures and magic of African life as witnessed by the two artists: “We have a point of origin and balance our elements within that framework. “ Selected Collections Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Raton, FL Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma, WA Cancer Care Alliance Center, Seattle, WA Anne Gould Hauberg Collection, Seattle, WA Allen & Kathleen Shoup Collection, Seattle, WA Jon & Mary Shirley Collection, Seattle, WA Museum of American Glass, Millville, NJ Museum of Glass, Tacoma, WA Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, AL "Untitled, Witness Series", Glass and Metal Wall Mounting Sculpture, Photography

It is pictured here installed outdoors with an optional welded steel stand, but the sculpture can also be suspended from another structure or stand, indoors or outdoors. Watch the short video to see "Philomena Dates a Photon" spinning from the ceiling in an indoor gallery setting! Jeff Glode Wise makes wildly exuberant sculptures. He utilizes such diverse materials as steel, wood, stone, glass, concrete, bronze, and gold -- whichever is the most appropriate for the aesthetic and functional purposes at hand. He then transforms these materials through various techniques and crafts honed for years through his practice of jewelry making: welding, carving, casting, meticulous fitting, plating, etc. Art and the making of objects have defined Jeff Wise...

  • Probability Deep Blue 4 - elegant, curved, abstract, glass, wall sculpture
    By John Paul Robinson
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
John Paul Robinson creates original contemporary wall sculptures from coloured glass that are filled with light. This piece features elegant arched deep blue tubes of glass that are polished to a smooth finish and overlap one another to create a dynamic composition. The Canadian artist often explores themes related to how the world works. This is one of a series intended to represent the dual nature of light as both a particle and a wave. In physics, the wave nature of light is referred to as a "probability wave". “The thickness of the glass and curvature of the lens conspire to create their own optical effect. As your gaze moves across the piece it causes the small grains of coloured glass to shift just a bit. Starry Starry Night...
