Metis Atash
PUNKBUDDHA Large "DOTS IN BLACK" feat. Hirst

2020

About the Item

German artist Metis Atash’s sculptures combine pop art aesthetics with conceptual art traditions, creating unique artworks that have deep spiritual meanings, but that also often reference the history of art and fashion. After graduating in political science and economics, Atash successfully operated her own investor relations consultancy boutique in Munich, Germany. In 2006, however, she decided to dedicate herself full-time to her passion for art, design and fashion by creating one-of-a-kind sculptures, covered in Swarovski crystals. Atash sculpts in fiberglass, and uses acrylic paint, automotive lacquer and Swarovski crystals to decorate her pieces. All of her works are subject to a multi-step process of clay modeling, molding, sanding and lacquering. The topics of her works are based on the spiritual being, and her sculptures are inspired by the ancient teachings of Daoism. The word DAO translates to path or way of life. Daoist thought focuses on nature, the relationship between humanity and the cosmos, health and longevity, as well as action through inaction, which is believed to produce harmony with the universe. Atash’s pieces are meant to be perceived as the mirror of our eternal soul. They showcase life’s duality, and the merging of our inner beings with our physical selves. Atash’s fierce entrepreneurial spirit and talent for business has led to the meteoric rise of her work’s visibility around the globe. Her works have been exhibited in selected galleries and showrooms in the United States and Europe.

Text by Terence Sharpe There is a moment in Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972) when the character Hari commits suicide by drinking liquid oxygen. As she is not actually a human, but an artificial hybrid product of the mysterious planet and the protagonists’ memories, she heals rapidly and is alive again minutes later. Her choice to take her own life is poignant, seemingly the action of a being becoming aware of its hopeless infinitude. Her realization that while the men will die on the space station or elsewhere, her existence is that of immortality, a deeply alienating notion that causes her to seek her own destruction. The Montreal artist Guillaume Lachapelle has one work that prompts a sense of eternal alienation that echoes Hari’s tragedy. The work greets the viewer with a empty doorway flanked by clinically white bookshelves...
