Yves Klein Small IKB Venus Brooch Sculpture Jewel in International Klein Blue

1956

About the Item

Yves Klein, Small IKB Venus Brooch Bronze multiple, painted with International Klein Blue (IKB). From a model created in 1956. Edition of 500 copies + 100 artist’s proofs. This copy numbered 121/175. Height: 6 centimeters but 12 centimeters is the height of the Plexiglas box. Yves Klein is an influential French conceptual artist who works in a wide variety of fields. Arguably best known for his use of a very vibrant shade of blue, he began to create his monochrome series in the 1950s by developing and patenting his own signature shade known as IKB or International Klein Blue. Born April 28, 1928 in Nice, the artist founded the New Realism movement with the art critic Pierre Restany in Klein's Paris apartment in 1960. The other members are Arman, Jean Tinguely and François Dufrêne. His concept art / performance mix contrasts with the expressionism and early Pop sensibilities of other artists of the time, some of his most famous works feature nude mannequins who act like living brushes to paint canvases with his blue pigment in the Anthropometries series. The artist's short but prolific career ended on June 6, 1962, when he died of a heart attack at the age of 34.
