CoadeBucranium Mask Arch Plaster Panel
About the Item
This decorative panel consists of a plaster base adorned with bucranium decoration, framed by painted wood. Bucranium, originating from the Greek term meaning 'ox skull,' represents a carved ornamentation frequently employed in Classical architectural designs. The skulls symbolize the ancient Greek and Roman sacrificial ceremonies. Among the renowned ancient instances of sculpted bucranium, a notable example remains preserved on the remaining section of the entablature at the Temple of Vespasian and Titus (dated to the 80s AD) in the Roman Forum.
In contemporary usage, these panels serve as decorative plaques, often mounted on walls to enhance aesthetic appeal.

Coade
Established in 2000, Coade Studio specialises in creating exquisite sculpture in classical and contemporary style using a variety of materials, namely Coade, bronze, lead, plaster, resin and terracotta. Our team of highly skilled craftsmen produce portraiture, classical ornaments and monumental figures for discerning clients. Coade stone was created in the 18th century as a remarkable new building material and was used by the eminent architects of the day. The characteristics of the material, which is actually ceramic, makes it possible to produce sculpture with the finest of detail but also durable and resistant to harsh weather. When Stephen Pettifer finished his training in Sculpting, Stone Carving, Restoration and Conservation, he was surprised to find that Coade was no longer being used as a sculptural medium and that the method had been lost over time. He set out to develop the recipe and techniques of producing Coade to the same standard as was originally used in the 18th century. Today, Coade Studio takes on commissions of classical sculpture and contemporary pieces for modern country estates, as well as carrying out restoration of historic buildings in the UK.
