About the Item
This recent body of work from Jeff Suina (Cochiti Pueblo) presents a series of complex clay vessels and forms that utilize traditional Cochiti techniques in unexpected ways. As an artist, Suina draws inspiration from a broad range of subject matter that spans far beyond his chosen media. A self-professed "sci-fi nerd", he has embraced the use of digital modeling technology in drafting the compositions of his complex glaze patterns and has begun to explore the realm of natively digital works (AKA - NFT's!) as well. While referencing contemporary phenomena, such as Star Trek, quantum mechanics and J.R.R. Tolkein, Suina's designs are built up through multiple layers of foraged and naturally derived pigment made from wild spinach, utilizing ancestral technologies to communicate playful, contemporary messages.
