About the Item
Virginia Mahoney’s “Reining in the Variables” is a 21 x 19 x 8 inch ceramic and metal wall sculpture in lavender, gold, maroon, black, silver, white, and brown. A cutout figure in silver and black painted metal interacts with ceramic shards and wire forms on a painted ceramic background. The piece hangs easily by the wire loop attached to the back, where the artist’s signature is located. Virginia Mahoney
Virginia Mahoney is a mixed-media sculptor who currently works with garment-related forms. She makes work about discomfort and doubt, and is intrigued by the ambiguity of words, standards, and categories. Her unconventional approaches often inspire ideas. Mahoney’s objects embody uncertainty, unrealized expectations, or burdening thoughts and questions. Prior to receiving her MFA in ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art (MI), Mahoney graduated with High Honors from University of Florida, and was a Core Fellow at Penland School of Craft (NC). Her work has been shown in juried/invitational exhibits in the U.S., and is in the Lancaster Art Museum collection (PA). She works in her home studio in Brockton, Massachusetts.
