Fine Pair of George III Mahogany Wine Cisterns Attributed to Gillows
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other.
Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers. Thomas Sheraton explained the functions of dining room pedestals in his 'Drawing Book' of 1793: 'IN spacious dining rooms the sideboards are often made without drawers of any sort, having simply a rail, a little ornament...

Stow Davis Kidney Shaped Executive Desk
By Stow Davis
Located in Hanover, MA
Handsome late 1940's American Art Deco kidney shaped desk designed by Giacomo "Jack" Buzzita for Stow Davis' Executive collection.
Beautifully refinished bleached walnut large kidney shaped top overhangs ovoid shaped satin finished dark walnut case of drawers with cast bronze pulls and a crescent moon shaped pedestal support, both on a shaped ebonized plinth.
Case appears like four drawers but is actually three as the middle is double height and fitted for files. Organizer vide poche in top drawer along with metal label "Stow & Davis Furniture Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan".
Crescent moon pedestal can be reversed if preferred so the cove faces inside (see last two detail images).
Stylistically similar to designs of Gilbert Rohde.
Depth of top from center is 39 inches.
This particular desk is unusual insofar as all the others I've seen are oriented the other way so that the ovoid case is on the left side and the crescent pedestal is on the right while the kidney top...

The company was established by Robert Gillow (1704-1772). He travelled to Lancaster to train as a cabinetmaker. Lancaster was a major trading port at this time, and Robert was able to forge important links with the West Indies, importing high quality mahogany from Jamaica, Cuba and the Honduras after setting up his business. Gillows of Lancaster is renowned in the world of Fine furniture, with antique cabinets by this Lancashire firm held in the same esteem as those of Sheraton and Chippendale. Gillows was producing Fine furniture for over 200 years, the majority of it for the aristocracy and upper classes and opening in 1740 London branch quickly establishing himself as a cabinetmaker of international importance. Robert Gillow was joined by his sons, Richard and Robert, who helped develop the company’s reputation. The company furnished public buildings in Australia, South Africa, Europe, Russia, India and US, also worked with Pugin on the interiors of the Palace of Westminster, circa 1840, later diversifying into fitting out passenger liners and luxury yachts. The last furniture by Gillows...

Antique Walnut Jupe Action Dining Table by Gillows, Late 19th Century
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in London, GB
This is a important and rare Queen Anne revival walnut jupe action dining table by Gillows, dating from the late 19th century.
The amazing table features a shaped circular crossbanded top with a moulded edge, the six triangular segments rotating and expanding to accomodate two sizes of leaves. This means that the table can be set to three different sizes as required to suit the occasion.
The shaped top and frieze is raised on shell-carved cabriole legs terminating in pad feet.
The table is stamped GILLOWS twice and bears the serial no. 96643.
The two sizes of white metal capped set of six large leaf inserts, and six small leaf inserts come complete with a leaf carrier chest .
The table seats four with all leaves removed, six with the small inserts and eight with the large inserts.
This fascinating table illustrates all the very best elements of English cabinet-making combined with the remarkable burst of inventiveness of the Industrial Revolution. It was not until John Johnstone and Robert Jupe patented their ingenious design in March 1835 for an expanding round table...
