Questions About Lucite Art Pieces
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
An original piece of art is a work that is considered to be an authentic example of an artist’s output, versus a reproduction. An original piece may refer to a sculpture, painting, a performance work or any other work in a range of other media. On 1stDibs, shop a range of antique and vintage original pieces of art.
  • La ChrysomeleFebruary 23, 2021
A definition of abstract art is art through which the artist doesn't attempt a visual depiction of the world. The artist may have other intentions : conveying a pure emotion, or achieving what (s)he perceives as visual perfection, etc. There are many kinds of abstract art : lyrical abstraction, geometrical abstraction, action painting… There is also an infinite spectrum between hyperrealism and pure abstraction, since one can argue that any brush stroke is by itself an abstraction of the reality — let alone flat color patches.

Shop a selection of Henri Matisse pieces from some of the world’s top art dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024
Roy Lichtenstein's most popular piece of art is a matter of opinion. One contender for the title is his 1963 diptych painting Whaam!, which has a scene of a fighter plane hitting another plane with a rocket from a 1962 issue of DC Comics’s series All American Men of War. Another of his well-known works is Crying Girl from the same year. It features a woman in distress, depicted with a mixture of drama and deadpan humor. Other famous works by Lichtenstein include Drowning Girl, Look Mickey, M-Maybe, In the Car and Masterpiece. Find a collection of Roy Lichtenstein art on 1stDibs.

Jim Dines' most famous piece of art is The Smiling Workman. It was one of the artist's short art performances known as Happenings. During the 30-second performance, he painted the words "I love what I'm doing, HELP" on a canvas while covered in paint and drinking tomato juice meant to symbolize paint from a glass. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Jim Dine art.

One way to tell if you have a piece of genuine hand-blown glass is to locate the pontil mark. This is a scar usually found on the bottom of the piece where the pontil was broken off from the glass object. An absence of this scar may indicate your glass piece was mold-blown. Shop a collection of vintage and contemporary hand-blown glass from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

Henry Moore was a prolific artist and it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly how many pieces of art he created. The Henry Moore Foundation lists that their online catalogue of his works currently features more than 11,000 sculptures, drawings, tapestries, textiles and graphics. That’s a significant number indeed and does not represent all of his contributions to the art world. On 1stDibs, find a variety of original artwork from top artists.

After the success of his “Sol” series in the 1960s, Richard Anuszkiewicz began to focus on his “Centered Square” designs in the mid-1970s.
