Daum Nancy French Art Deco Acid Etched Pâte-de-Verre Flower Vase, ca. 1930
By Daum
Located in New York, NY
This geometric, floral inspired 1930s French Art Deco deeply acid etched pâte-de-verre elegant flower vase bears the signature Daum Nancy on the base edge. There is a nice weight to the thick-walled heavy glass. It has a beautiful amber yellow color etched right through to the clear. Sophisticated in its simplicity, the design consists of geometrically-stylized leaves and flowers encircling a vase, with a smooth banded edge at the top. Period: Ca. 1930’s Style: French Art Deco. Medium: Acid Etched Pâte-de-Verren Art Glass. Dimensions: Height: 6.875” x max. diameter: 6.875” x opening diameter: 3.375” Markings: Engraved on the base edge, ‘Daum Nancy’ Condition: Good antique condition. No chips or cracks. No damages, no restorations. Maker: Daum Freres of Nancy, France The success of the Daum glass company is directly a result of its excellent management and entrepreneurial spirit. The accidental founder of the company was Jean Daum (1825-1885). He was a financier of the company when it was known as the Verrerie Sainte Catherine. This company quickly hit hard times and it was Jean Daum who took control of it before it failed. Daum was not an artist by trade. He was a notary and industrialist. This new venture was a trial by fire. The first glass produced by Daum is collectible, but it was not art glass. They made mostly clear glass with gold rims to be used while dining. It wasn’t until the 1890s that Daum began producing what we think of today as “Daum Nancy” glass. Daum glass is thought to be made by the Daum Freres (brothers). This was not accurate when the company first began operating. It was Jean Daum and his son Auguste Daum (1853-1909) who laid the ground work for Auguste and his brother Antonin Daum (1864-1930) to lead the company in the early 20th century. All Daum glass is handmade, but that certainly shouldn’t lead the reader to believe that Daum was a mom and pop...

"Untitled 'Navy Shroud'" 2015 Sewn Rope Sculptural Fiber Object by Doug Johnston
By Doug Johnston
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Untitled (Navy Shroud)", 2015 coiled nylon cord, sewing thread, urethane resin "Untitled (Navy Shroud)" was made as part of a group of works exploring objects as shroud spaces. The pieces create a space, the contents unknown, upon which the viewer's understanding becomes one reality, while another reality of the object itself is in continuous withdrawal from the viewers' perception. The exploration was based on contemplations of "Schrödinger's cat" and Object-Oriented Ontology. The work was made by coiling nylon cordage and sewing it together on an industrial zig-zag sewing machine. In the process of coiling, irregularities are introduced that alter the overall form as it is being made. These irregularities are placed and responded to improvisationally, working towards a composition that appears as if a thick cloth is loosely draped over an object of indeterminate form. The interior of the nylon vessel was then coated by hand with a black epoxy resin, which solidified the textile into a rigid shell. The result is a free-standing shroud-like object, which is to be placed into a space as a sculptural object, to conceal other objects, unsightly architectural features, etc. This work was first exhibited in 2015 at Patrick Parrish Gallery as part of my solo exhibition "what it is". It was later shown in 2017-2018 at the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, as well as several other group exhibitions. It has also appeared in several design and art publications in print and online. Since 2010 Doug Johnston has produced a wide range of functional and sculptural objects using a process of coiling and stitching rope using industrial sewing machines...

"Coil Closed Net" Wall-Mounted Coiled Cotton Fiber Sculpture by Doug Johnston
By Doug Johnston
Located in Brooklyn, NY
-Made in 2014 -cotton cord, sewing thread, wood wall mount This piece was made by coiling a single length of cotton cord, and repetitively and discretely sewing the coil together with an industrial sewing machine. The cord is raw cotton and is sewn with red and navy blue sewing thread. The piece undulates in relief from the wall, and the excess sewing thread is left intact lending detail and texture. This piece was originally part of the "Brooklyn Nets" solo exhibition at Aberson Exhibits in Tulsa, OK in 2014 and has been included in several group exhibitions around the USA from 2015-2019. Since 2010 Doug Johnston has produced a wide range of functional and sculptural objects using a process of coiling and stitching rope using industrial sewing machines...
