About David Yarrow
David Yarrow was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966. He took up photography at an early age and as a 20-year-old found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, David took the famous picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and, as a result, was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other sporting events. Many years later David established himself as a fine art photographer by documenting the natural world from new perspectives and the last nine years have been career-defining.

About RISK:
RISK (Kelly Graval) (b. 1967) was one of the first artists to exhibit graffiti and street art in galleries. With a background in fine art, Graval has a style defined by cleanly executed lettering paired with graphic imagery and architectural lines. He has participated in a number of street art crews, most famously West Coast Artists (WCA) and the Seventh Letter. In the course of his nearly 30-year career, Graval has become one of the most influential figures for subsequent generations of graffiti artists, particularly in Los Angeles. He is also considered one of the first artists to have painted on freight trains, as well as a pioneer of “painting in the heavens”—a graffiti term referring to highly elevated surfaces like billboards, rooftops, and overpasses.
Kelly "RISK" Graval has been synonymous with the Los Angeles art community for over 30 Years. From his early days as a founder of the West Coast Graffiti movement to gallery and museum exhibits around the globe, including the 2012 "Art In The Streets" at the LA MoCA and the hugely successful “Beyond The Streets” exhibits in Los Angeles and New York. His work is shown at top galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, New York, Miami, and London.

1. He was knighted by the Medici Family
2. He was the first artist invited to paint in Michael Angelos studio in over 400 years
3. He was the first West Coast artist to paint the N.Y. Subway Trains. During summer break from high school in 1987, he hitchhiked to New York to paint Subway trains. He spent a few weeks painting trains, tunnels, and streets. He gained attention and met many of his inspirations including Lee Quinones, and Henry Chaflant
4. He was the first to paint freight trains on the West Coast and started the freight train movement. He was also the first to paint a top to bottom freight.
5. He was the first to paint freeway overpasses and signs. This later became dubbed heavens by his crewmates Wisk and Ser who went on to dominate freeway signs throughout Los Angeles.
6. He was the the first to paint full-color pieces and productions on the freeway creating the Los Angeles freeway movement
7. He won the world Graffiti Championship with partner Slick in England held in 1989
8. After winning the National Scholastics Arts Award in High School, he received scholarships to Savannah School of Arts and Design, as well as Pasadena Arts Center. He was very active in the streets and struggled to commit to school. He was arrested multiple times and spent a short stint in Los Angeles County Jail. He ended up attending the University Of Southern California Fine Arts. Risk finished art at USC despite being kicked out for painting a mural on the roof of the Fine Arts Department. He was later reinstated with a scholarship. The University went on to make a post of the mural and sent it to every High School in the United States.
9. Risk worked with too many Hollywood personalities, bands, and artist peers to mention, including Ice Cube, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janes Addiction, Guns and Roses, Michael Jackson, and many more. Over the last few weeks we have quietly been photographing senior Native Americans against the backdrop of quintessential and emblematic American vistas.
Whilst we will be releasing some of the series in the run up to the Presidential Election, this is not an overtly political statement from us. We know that Native Americans have long had a leaning toward the Democratic Party, but we took this assignment on because it is relevant, not to be political.
There is wide recognition now that Christopher Columbus did not discover America in 1492 and the events in Minneapolis have accelerated the debate on the possibility of institutionalised racism in the teaching of American history. This is not a discussion we want to fully engage in - as we are ill equipped to add value, but I do want to celebrate some of the tribal elders I have had the fortune to encounter in the last month. Their pride, manners, grace and humility have been humbling. We have made new friends in the North.
For this project we worked with Chief John Spotted Tail, the great-great-grandson of the fabled Lakota chief Spotted Tail. We spent two days with him in Northern Wyoming and he was so excited to wear the headpiece that only the most senior Native American chiefs like him can wear. His attire was emphatically his decision not ours. Their heritage is integral to their souls.

I took this photograph of the legendary West Texas cowboy - Ty Mitchell - on a sandbank on the Rio Grande. Ty stands 6ft 5” tall and my general assessment is that not much fazes this guy. Meanwhile, the location is about as good as it gets and is rather wonderfully named Contraband Creek.
I was standing in Mexico and 20 yards across the river was the US. Every time I walked knee deep across the river to change a lens or camera, I entered America and then on my return I re-entered Mexico. I think I actually entered America four times in a morning - all rather surreal with this talk of a wall.

I hope this image is identified as having some of my trademarks. Every inch of the frame sweats and every person within the frame firmly stakes claim to his or her presence. I was greedy in the amount of information I wanted in the picture and for it to come off, I needed luck as well as strong communication with everyone on set. It has the cinematic feel that I often strive for and I think in time I will look back very fondly on that evening. At the moment it is all a little fresh and the subject matter is sufficiently adrift from my normal work that it is difficult to find context. But my sense is that it is a special photograph.
The goal was to attain compositional harmony amidst the chaos of the beach landing, which was not that easy an objective as this landing was for real. This raw and rocky coastline in Anguilla is no studio. In retrospect it is remarkable that not only are the faces of the six male pirates in the landing party all in view but they also show collective endeavour. They had enough to think about dealing with the boat in the tide and maybe the truth is that they weren’t in role at all.
Whilst getting soaked, out of my right eye I was checking the barrel in the sea, as I didn’t want to lose it behind the boat. There was quite a bit of multi-tasking going on in that one minute. Keeping a watch on two Rastafarian friends on the rocks was a further dimension. It was quite late in the day and by that time, I couldn't be too sure of their footing given their activities during the day.

In my deliberations as to how to tell a Nantucket story, there were some key asso-ciations of the island that I knew I needed to incorporate. One was always going to be its storied maritime past, and in particular its leading position in the whaling industry. Then there are certain features on the island that if included in an image would reinforce a sense of place - such as Nantucket Grey buildings and of course the lighthouses.
But in our production meetings in the run up to the assignment, there was one feature I kept on requesting that we prioritised - the cobbled streets. When I think of Nantucket, I think of the cobbles - particularly on Main Street - not only because of their aesthetic appeal, but also because they tell a story of the island’s British roots. Taher Jaoui (b.1978) is a French Neo-Abstract Expressionist painter, who was born in Tunisia and currently works in Germany. Jaoui graduated from the world-renowned Sorbonne University in Paris in 2007, where he studied Mathematics and Engineering. This education continues to inform Jaoui’s compositions which blend formulas and calculations with abstract forms and colors. Along with his personal experiences, Jaoui’s inspiration comes from many sources, including abstract expressionism, cartoons, graffiti, street art, and primitivism.
Jaoui’s work mixes painting and drawing in ways that are both abstract and figurative. His colorful compositions stimulate the viewers’ feelings and imagination, allowing them to build their own interpretations. I hope this image is identified as having some of my trademarks. Every inch of the frame sweats and every person within the frame firmly stakes claim to his or her presence. I was greedy in the amount of information I wanted in the picture and for it to come off, I needed luck as well as strong communication with everyone on set. It has the cinematic feel that I often strive for and I think in time I will look back very fondly on that evening. At the moment it is all a little fresh and the subject matter is sufficiently adrift from my normal work that it is difficult to find context. But my sense is that it is a special photograph.
The goal was to attain compositional harmony amidst the chaos of the beach landing, which was not that easy an objective as this landing was for real. This raw and rocky coastline in Anguilla is no studio. In retrospect it is remarkable that not only are the faces of the six male pirates in the landing party all in view but they also show collective endeavour. They had enough to think about dealing with the boat in the tide and maybe the truth is that they weren’t in role at all.
Whilst getting soaked, out of my right eye I was checking the barrel in the sea, as I didn’t want to lose it behind the boat. There was quite a bit of multi-tasking going on in that one minute. Keeping a watch on two Rastafarian friends on the rocks was a further dimension. It was quite late in the day and by that time, I couldn't be too sure of their footing given their activities during the day.
