Mid 19th Century Chinese Ningxia Carpet ( 17'10" x 17'10" - 545 x 545 )
Located in New York, NY
Ningxia North Central China
17'10" x 17'10"
Circa 1850
Warp: cotton, off white, handspun, Z-4-S
Weft: cotton, off white, handspun, 2 shoots alternating
Pile: wool, 3 strand, handspun
Knot: asymmetric, open left, 48 knots per square inch
Sides: one cord, offwhite cotton wrapped
End: no original finish
This is a particularly large example of a Mandarin official’s carpet with a central medallion displaying nine lion dogs collectively symbolic of success on the national Chin Shih examination which provided guaranteed entry into the national administrative bureaucracy and the wealth devolving therefrom. The nine lion dogs are a rebus for success in the national bureaucracy. The apricot ground features 11 full or partial rows of tree paeonies, flower and stem. This carpet is particularly large and clearly was made for a highly placed official or the wealthy family of a recent graduate of whom great things were expected. The principal was probably Buddhist as indicated by the embroidered ball and precious objects in the medallion. The clouds surrounding the lion dogs form a broken, polychrome circle rather than the usual continuous cloud wreath. This is one of the several features indicating a bespoke order rather than a piece made for the market. Another indicator is the exceptional size, as the standard square Ningxia Mandarin carpet is about 12 to 14 feet square. The main border continues the colour combination, with a now apricot ground and paeonies among floral arabesques. The blue inner stripe is unusual with butterflies alternating with paired peaches...

Spindle Bar Chair in Solid Walnut and Steel Designed by Craig Bassam
By BassamFellows
Located in Ridgefield, CT
Since its release, the Spindle Chair’s distinctive silhouette has appeared in a vast array of celebrated commercial and residential interiors. The phenomenally successful piece was inspired by a visit to Louis Kahn’s Exeter Library. Designer Craig Bassam’s imagination was ignited when he noticed the traditional utilitarian chair juxtaposed against the powerful geometry of Kahn’s building. Seduced by its elemental simplicity, Bassam realized an updated spindle back chair would fit perfectly within the BassamFellows ‘Craftsman Modern’ aesthetic.
The BassamFellows Spindle Chair offers a new take on the classic piece, a descendent of the classic English Windsor Chair. One first notices its weightless quality, which Bassam achieved by using metal for the chair’s legs and spindles, giving the illusion of two floating surfaces. This contemporary reboot makes the spindles less prominent, evoking a less rustic, 21st century setting for the chair.
A counterpoint to the metal spindles is the chair’s timber elements, including an ultra-comfortable ergonomic seat carved from solid wood. Given its updated minimal silhouette, ultra-light materiality and concern for comfort, it’s the kind of chair you can envision in many contexts.
The Spindle Collection includes counter and barstool...

Artemide Gople Classic Max 22W E26 Ceiling Light in Silver
By Artemide
Located in Hicksville, NY
Gople Lamp is the latest product in the ongoing collaboration between Artemide and Bjarke Ingels Group. Gople is crafted of a pill shape, the glass is blown according to ancient Venetian techniques in Murano. The shape of the glass helps the light to diffuse a soft glow throughout, creating a comfortable ambience.
The Gople family is enriched with new versions available in a smaller size. Gople is now available as a table and floor lamp, in addition to the suspension. The new additions feature the same pill shaped diffuser crafted of handblown glass. Gople Mini is available in a suspension, table, and ceiling version. The basic form of the Gople Lamp enhances the beauty of glass, hand-processed according to an ancient Venetian technique that gradually turns white glass into crystal glass by combining both upon blowing, thus making each piece unique. More innovative finishes are added, including silver or copper vacuum metallization.
The silver, bronze, copper, and blue finishes are made with an innovative and sustainable metal vacuum deposition process. From the point of view of environmental-friendliness, “sputtering” is the absolutely cleanest coating technology for the type of metal used and because all emissions are abated, in particular those into the atmosphere of sulfuric acid and cyanides produced by galvanic processes. Solid paint with up to 5% of solvents (compared to 75% of traditional products) is employed for the secondary protective clear coat phase. The process generates very little waste and the resulting finish is particularly resistant over time. In any of these cases, glass finishing is designed to ensure the best relationship with the emitted light, screening the source and maximizing direct emission through transparency. The most basic version with the traditional E26 or E12 joint is designed to provide different performance levels compared to the more innovative RWB version, where colors can be combined with each other to create the desired lighting scenario.
Additional Information:
Materials: Chrome metal canopy and diffuser in handblown glass
Color: Transparent (Diffuser), Chrome (Canopy), Silver (Gradient...
