Delphin Enjolras Art

French, 1857-1945

Delphin Enjolras was born in France in 1857. He began his studies at the École de Dessin de la Ville de Paris, focusing primarily on watercolors. Enjolras soon moved on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts, learning from masters including the Academic great Jean-Léon Gérôme. Landscapes were his primary focus in his early career, though it became clear that painting women was where his true talent showed the brightest. Enjolras became a celebrated painter of nudes, and his later work became imbued with a stunning sensuality. Beginning in 1890, he frequently exhibited at the Paris Salon, and he joined the Société des Artistes Français in 1901. Enjolras's works are highly exhibited throughout France, including significant collections of his work at the Musée du Puy and the Musée d’Avignon.

Le Martyr de Saint Sebastian (Academic Figurative Oil Painting in Gold Frame)
By Mark Beard
Located in Hudson, NY
Academic style figurative oil painting on canvas 48 x 24 inches unframed 58 x 32 x 3 inches in gold leaf wood frame This vertical, contemporary figurative painting of Le Martyr de Saint Sebastian was made by Mark Beard under his fictitious artistic persona, Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon. Painted in a modern Academic style, Beard paints this Christian saint with dramatic detail and emotional gravity. The scene is a common artistic depiction of Sebastian who according to traditional belief, was killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of the Christians. Here the artist depicts a nearly nude Saint Sebastian standing stoically while tied to a rustic brown post. A lush green forested terrain decorates the background while a white neo-classical building sits in the distance, which is perhaps the tomb where Saint Sebastian's remains were laid to rest. Saint Sebastian's pale blue-grey, stone-like stone tone is characteristic of Mark Beard's work who often portrays muscular young men similarly to Greek statues. The vertical Academic style figurative oil painting is complimented with a vintage style gold leaf wood frame. The painting is signed 'H. A. Michallon 1872' in red oil paint in the lower right corner. The gold frame is also signed and inscribed with black oil paint in several places (please see images). Mark Beard is a contemporary artist who made this work under the pseudonym Hippolyte A. Michallon who painted during the late 1800's so slight wear (see images) is intentionally staged to align with the factitious artist's purposed history. About the artist: Mark Beard is perhaps the most literal example of an artist pulled in so many different directions that he chose to “invent” six different personae in which to channel his overflowing energy and need for expression. Each painting style is radically different from the next, so it remains entirely believable that the work could stem from six completely different people of different time periods and different schools of thought. With a background in set design, Beard has always been one who could conjure total magic with anything available. Mark Beard has exhibited with Carrie Haddad Gallery for nearly twenty years and there has never been a dull moment. Mark Beard, born in 1956 in Salt Lake city, now lives in New York City. His works are in museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; and the Harvard, Yale, and Princeton University Art Museums; among many others. We would not be the least bit surprised to see new ‘personas’ emerge in the coming years. About: Hippolyte - Alexandre Michallon, 1849 -1930 The long and peripatetic artistic career of Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon began in a conventional fashion. The only son of prosperous bourgeois parents in Tours, he first studied drawing with his mother, an accomplished amateur painter of insects. His father, an undertaker who appreciated his son's talent and supported his ambition to become a painter, sent him to Paris at age sixteen to enroll in the studio of Francois-Edouard Picot (1786-1868), an eminent history painter and professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, with whom he studied for three years, until Picot's death. Under his aging teacher's guidance and tutelage, Michallon entered the preliminary stages of the Prix de Rome contest at the Ecole three times, winning an Honorable Mention in 1869 for his composition entitled The Solider of the Marathon. For the next twenty years Michallon regualarly exhibited paintings on historical and biblical themes at the Paris Salon, as well as commissioned portraits. By his own account, the most ambitious work of Michallon's career was a thirty-foot canvas depicting Noah's Ark, which he exhibited in the Salon in 1875. Michallon began painting atmospheric but zoologically correct images of exotic animals in the wild. These achieved a certain popularity among French and foreign collectors alike, providing Michallon with financial security for the first time in his career. Michallon moved to England in 1893. His outstanding technical skills easily earned him a position on the faculty of the Slade School of Art in 1900. The craze for animal paintings proved short-lived. He continued to teach at Slade for the next two decades, but his classes gradually dwindled in size as the academic approach and methods he espoused went from outmoded to downright unpopular. Finally in 1922, finding himself reduced to a single pupil, the talented young American Bruce Sargeant, he retired from Slade, persuading Sargeant to leave with him and undergo private instruction at home. Several years later he retired to a cottage at St. Ives, Cornwall, where he lived quietly until his death in 1930, forgotten by all but a few former students, among them Edith Thayer Cromwell...

Large Italian Surrealist Mod Art Oil Painting Jean Calogero Big Eyed Girl Doll
By Jean Calogero
Located in Surfside, FL
Hand signed lower left canvas measures 24 X 18, framed it measures 34 X 28 Calogero was born August 20, 1922 in Catania, Sicily. Self-taught Surreal Artist First exhibitions in 1945 in Sicily and Rome were very successful. He arrived in Paris in 1947 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He is best known for his Surrealism and genre works. His paintings are dreamlike and visionary. They travel to an infinite space created by the artist through his memories, the sky and the sea so dear to him. In his paintings there are a few common themes: the masks with their dual dimensions that hide or shows only what you want, the profiles of the women, and the horsemen, drawn as the Sicilian tradition requires. He exhibited at the Gallery Hervé in 1951 and the following year he went to New York to present his show, then in 1953 he was invited to Los Angeles, where he returned two years later, and from where he regularly exhibited his works, and San Francisco. In 1954, Maximilien Gauthier devoted a book to him published by "The Gemini." The first exhibition in Japan was in 1965. He was awarded the Grand Silver Medal by the City of Paris in 1957. Calogero had countless exhibitions in Paris, in the fifties, plus the American exhibitions in New York (Associated American Artists, 1952), Los Angeles (James Vigevano Galleries, 1953) and then later in Japan and in major galleries in Italy. He lived and worked for many years in Paris and Italy. He died in 2001. Galerie Hervè, Parigi 1950. Associated American Artists - New York 1952. James Vigevano Galleries, Los Angeles 1953. Reflections of Contemplation by German Artist Karl Weise, Candle Light Genre
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting features a young girl sitting on a chair in a dimly lit room, illuminated by the soft glow of an orange-tinted ceiling lamp. This painting captures the essence of the candle-light genre of art, which originated in the 17th century and was popularized by Dutch and Flemish artists. The candle-light paintings were characterized by the use of a single source of light, which was usually a candle, and were often accompanied by the inclusion of reflective surfaces such as mirrors, to create an ambiance of warmth and intimacy. Weise's painting is a beautiful example of this genre, as he uses the same technique of a single source of light to create a sense of depth and realism in the painting. The girl in the painting is dressed in a vibrant red dress and white stockings, and her expression suggests a moment of contemplation. On the table, there is a photo frame, perhaps containing a picture of someone dear to her, and its reflection is visible in the mirror in the background. The piano on the right side of the painting is in shadow, while above it is a portrait painting with a golden frame, which adds to the ambiance of the room. Karl Weise was a renowned painter known for his exceptional use of light and shadow in his paintings, which created a mesmerizing play of light that evoked a sense of depth and realism in his work. His paintings were highly appreciated during his lifetime, and they continue to be admired today for their timeless beauty and artistic merit. In conclusion, Karl Weise's painting is a beautiful example of the candle-light genre of art. The use of a single source of light creates a warm and intimate ambiance, while the shadows add depth and dimension to the painting. The young girl's expression and the inclusion of the photo frame and portrait painting add a sense of storytelling to the painting, making it a truly captivating classic artwork...

Au Coin du Feu - Belle Epoque Portrait Oil Painting of French Society Beauties
By Delphin Enjolras
Located in Gerrards Cross, GB
This is a fine early 20th century oil painting depicting a young Belle Epoque beauty in the warm glow of a fireside making her finally preparations for an evening engagement by the famous French academic painter Delphin Enjolras (1857-1945). ‘Au Coin du Feu’ is signed by the artist, and hangs in a superb quality, new commissioned gold metal leaf frame. As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Delphin Enjolras studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts, and began exhibiting at the Salon in Paris in 1890. He became famous for his portraits of elegant young socialites lit by the warm glow of a single light source, usually a bedside lamp or fireside. Like Alfred Stevens and Auguste Toulmouche before him, Enjolras was a master of boudoir scenes of young ladies but it was his use of gentle chiaroscuro that makes his intimate pictures unique. Enjolras’ enduring popularity means that copies of his oil paintings – bearing spurious signatures – are not uncommon, and usually the work of Enjolras imitator Max Carlier 1872-1932. Genuine oil paintings...
