Erwin Kettemann Art

German, b. 1897

Erwin Kettemann was a landscape painter from Munich. He was a representative of late Impressionism as well as the 19th century Karlsruher Schule. In the style of the Karlsruhe Schule, a close study and observation of nature constituted an essential part of the work. He depicted trees, plants, rocks, stones, waterfalls and streams. He emphasized the details of geological formations, and different mountain forms as well as geographical details. Romanticism and the depiction of mood did not play any role, as artworks were not regarded as expressions of the inner world of the artists. The focus is on the landscape north of the Alps; artworks depicting Italy and the ideal or classical models did not belong in this genre. Landscape carried references to geology. Kettemann was a member of the Reichsverband bildender Künstler Deutschlands. Sixteen works of Erwin Kettemann, all mountain sceneries, were displayed in the Great German Art Exhibitions from 1938–44. Huge rock formations and high mountains were shown. It is remarkable that almost all of the GDK-paintings were taken from the point of view from half way up a mountain, or at least from a certain altitude, but not from the valley. It is unknown how far Kettemann, as a representative of the Karlsruhe Schule, went up the mountain to study and observe the scenery. His paintings were sold to Nazi leaders for prices of up to 8,000 Reichsmark. Buyers included Adolf Hitler, Otto Miesnner (Chief of the Presidential Chancellery of the Führer and the Chancellor), the Gauleitung Hessen-Nassau, the Bauleitung München and private companies and -individuals.

19th Century Japanese Silk Painting by Kano Chikanobu, Pheasants & Plum in Snow
Located in Kyoto, JP
Birds & Flowers of the Seasons Pheasants & Plum in Snow Ink, pigment and gofun on silk Kano Chikanobu 1819-1888 Signature: Chikanobu Seal: Shateki Offered here is an unframed ‘kacho-e’ painting by the 19th century Japanese Takamatsu domain painter Kano Chikanobu. There are 8 individual paintings available, which originally would have been part of a set of 12. ‘Kacho-e’ literally means ‘pictures of birds and flowers’. In reality it covers a wide range of natural motifs including birds, fish, insects and small animals in combination with flowers, grasses or trees. The theme has a long history in Japanese painting. It is one of three painting genres, the other two being landscape and figure, which derive from Chinese academic painting classification. As one of the accepted types of painting to be shown in official residences, scenes of birds, flowers and animals were rife with metaphorical reference as well as physical beauty. In these paintings Chikanobu has made conspicuous use of brilliant pigments and meticulous brushwork. The rocks, water, trees, blossoms, and birds are treated as stylized formal elements in a grand design. All of the components contribute to the patterned effect and tactile richness of the surface. Beyond their highly decorative qualities, the subject of some of the paintings are also an allusion to imperial allegiance; the pheasants are symbolic of bravery and steadfastness, peacocks represent divinity and power, and the phoenix paired with paulownia a just and benevolent ruler. Cranes and turtles symbolize longevity, and the lush, full bloom of the peony flower represents wealth and opulence. Paintings of native Japanese birds and flowers were appreciated primarily for their evocation of the seasons and the traditional poetic emotions associated with them. This is the case with the spring scene of cherry blossoms and birds and the winter scene of narcissus, nandina and sparrows. The rich expression of flower and bird paintings...

Large Irish Watercolor Snow on the Bog by Rev JH Flack
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a fabulous late 20th century piece of original Irish Art by the Late Reverend J.H. Flack of Athy, Co. Kildare, a renowned, listed, exhibited and respected Irish watercolorist. circa 2000. “Snow on the Bog” – depicts a winter scene in the Irish Midlands, famous for the largest Bog in Europe, The Bog of Allen. Framed, matted and under glass. The painting is signed but the signature is just under the matte. It beautifully captures a blanket of snow over the wet flat and sparsely vegetated boglands, with the reeds and rushes protruding from the snow and the bog holes still visible in the blanket of snow. It has a beautiful blurriness to it, the more you look at it the more you get captivated by the serenity and white haze !! Perfect for Texas summers: feel yourself cool down just looking at it !!!!!
