Francis Dodd Art

British, 1874-1949
Printmaker and pinter Francis Edgar Dodd was the born in Holyhead, Wales, on Novemeber 29, 1874. His formal art training began at the Glasgow School of Art under Fra Newbery and Archibald Kay, and in 1893 he was awarded the Haldane Scholarship to travel and study throughout Europe, going to France, Italy, and Spain. He became friends with fellow student Muirhead Bone, who later became his brother-in-law. In 1895 Dodd moved to Manchester and then finally settled in Blackheath, London, where he set up his studio. With the onset of World War I Dodd was sent to the Western Front as a war artist for the War Propaganda Bureau (WPB), creating thirty portraits of military officials. This aided in his professional reputation after the war ended and he found success as a portraitist, in addition to his work in printmaking. In 1929 he was appointed a trustee of the Tate Gallery, and in 1927 he was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Academy, earning Full Member status in 1935. Dodd continued to live in Blackheath until his death by suicide in 1949. Exhibited: New English Art Club; Royal Academy; Royal Watercolour Society.

Large Pastel Landscape Purple Mountains Landscape American Modernist Painting
By Larry Horowitz
Located in Surfside, FL
LARRY HOROWITZ (American b. 1956) "Purple Mountains," 1988, pastel on paper Hand signed and dated L/R, "Horowitz '88," Dimensions sight 19 1/2" x 23", framed, 26 1/2" x 30 1/2". Larry Horowitz is an American landscape painter. He was born in 1956 in New York City and graduated from SUNY Purchase and immediately won the prestigious and coveted position as apprentice to Wolf Kahn. Horowitz's work captures the beauty of the American landscape with expert use of texture and color that invites imagination and discovery. Although he paints en plein air, he has a firm grounding in abstract expressionism through his education with former students from the Bauhaus and Hans Hofmann school. He has combined both points of view to develop his unique language. His work follows in the tradition of great Modernist American landscape painters Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keefe and Charles Burchfield but with a more modern, Fauvist color palette. He was included in the show "In the Country, By the Sea" at Madelyn Jordan Gallery along with David Kimball Anderson, Stanley Boxer, Byron Browne, Derek Buckner, Richard Diebenkorn, Larry Kelsey, Gary Komarin, and Susan Wides. Horowitz has also shown at Images Gallery along with Gary Bukovnik, Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Horowitz, Alex Katz, Robert Motherwell, Don Nice, Philip Pearlstein, Joseph Raffael, Hunt Slonem, Carol Summers and Neil Welliver. Horowitz has exhibited extensively both in the US and Canada and is included in numerous private, corporate and public collections. Reflections of Contemplation by German Artist Karl Weise, Candle Light Genre
Located in Stockholm, SE
This painting features a young girl sitting on a chair in a dimly lit room, illuminated by the soft glow of an orange-tinted ceiling lamp. This painting captures the essence of the candle-light genre of art, which originated in the 17th century and was popularized by Dutch and Flemish artists. The candle-light paintings were characterized by the use of a single source of light, which was usually a candle, and were often accompanied by the inclusion of reflective surfaces such as mirrors, to create an ambiance of warmth and intimacy. Weise's painting is a beautiful example of this genre, as he uses the same technique of a single source of light to create a sense of depth and realism in the painting. The girl in the painting is dressed in a vibrant red dress and white stockings, and her expression suggests a moment of contemplation. On the table, there is a photo frame, perhaps containing a picture of someone dear to her, and its reflection is visible in the mirror in the background. The piano on the right side of the painting is in shadow, while above it is a portrait painting with a golden frame, which adds to the ambiance of the room. Karl Weise was a renowned painter known for his exceptional use of light and shadow in his paintings, which created a mesmerizing play of light that evoked a sense of depth and realism in his work. His paintings were highly appreciated during his lifetime, and they continue to be admired today for their timeless beauty and artistic merit. In conclusion, Karl Weise's painting is a beautiful example of the candle-light genre of art. The use of a single source of light creates a warm and intimate ambiance, while the shadows add depth and dimension to the painting. The young girl's expression and the inclusion of the photo frame and portrait painting add a sense of storytelling to the painting, making it a truly captivating classic artwork...
