John Stuart Bedroom Sets

Grand Rapids, Michigan, was once known as “Furniture City” for its local mass-production industry that flourished from the mid-19th century into the early 20th century, led by furniture manufacturers like John Stuart. Stuart’s eponymous company, which would build showrooms in New York and Philadelphia, designed and sold elegant reproductions of various furniture styles, including 18th-century French and English furniture as well as what we now call mid-century modern home furnishings built by European craftsmen in the entrepreneur’s Grand Rapids factory.
In 1845, a British cabinetmaker named George Widdicomb arrived in New York before moving to Grand Rapids. There he set up a small cabinet shop in 1857 with a dozen craftsmen, including his son John Widdicomb. The store quickly found success due to Widdicomb’s English training and the dearth of other quality furniture makers in the region. Toward the end of the 19th century, Grand Rapids had earned an international reputation as a leader of American furniture manufacturing, and while the Widdicomb family would navigate some difficulty after the Civil War, they emerged anew as Widdicomb Brothers and Richards, and then the Widdicomb Furniture Company. Widdicomb’s son started his own company in 1897, the John Widdicomb Company, and in 1929, the Grand Rapids–born John Stuart joined the company as a director.
Stuart, who had been in the furniture industry since 1913, was named president of John Widdicomb Company in the early 1940s and by then had formed John Stuart, Inc., with partner Herbert M. Rothschild. John Stuart, Inc.’s offerings included oak buffets and other dining-room furnishings crafted in the Tudor and Elizabethan styles, with cabinet doors and drawer fronts characterized by meticulously carved natural-world motifs and other decorative flourishes. Stuart also oversaw the design of reproductions of sophisticated walnut and mahogany Queen Anne side tables and dining chairs, with the latter marked by pronounced, vase-shaped curves in the back splats and cabriole legs. In 1952, the manufacturer and distributor’s founder sold the business, including the right to trade under his name, to the John Widdicomb Company.

Provenance : Jerome Schottenstein Estate, Columbus Ohio. Jerome was was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, co-founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. The Schottenstein family were Lithuanian immigrants who began an extensive business Empire in the late 19th Century. Schottenstein Stores owns stakes in DSW and American Signature Furniture; American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB360 Capital Partners, over 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes and furniture. It also holds an ownership interest in American Eagle Outfitters, Wehmeyer in Germany, Cold Stone Creamery and The Mazel Company.
Since 1950, Saporiti Italia produces some of the most sophisticated and advanced pieces of furniture of the history of Italian design.
There is a leit motiv in all the company's creations: each new piece is history in itself. Catching time off balance and anticipating the future are both the Challenge and the vocation of Saporiti Italia. Each item created and constructed by the company is slightly ahead of its time and it is destined to last, both in form and function, until the next era.
The company, founded in 1950 by Mr. Sergio Saporiti and still under control of the Saporiti family, has contributed to the creation of milestones in the history of Italian design.
During these decades of fast growing economy and fast changing social environment, Saporiti Italia set its particular international and avant-garde style.
The first pieces of furniture of the Saporiti of the times were clearly influenced by emerging Scandinavian design, but with a special touch of Italian elegance in the use of finishing and materials. In 1965 Sergio Saporiti started a fruitful and “scientific” collaboration with one of the masters of Italian architecture and design of all times: Alberto Rosselli.

HIGHLY, IMPORTANT AND UNIQUE Empire Style Bedroom Suite or Set, in the Manner of Francois Linke (or similarly important Parisienne maker), from circa 1880.
The Suite/Set is almost completely original, save the bed, which was originally twin size, but professionally commissioned to be customized and converted into a Euro King Size for modern practicality. The quality of the conversion matches the quality of the suite/set.
All pieces have ormolu gilt mounted fittings; beautiful patina, beautiful parquetry; beautiful carrara marble tops, simply stunning!
About 10 years ago, I saw the ‘identical twin’ of the Commode in an Antique Store on Central Park in New York, however it had a less desirable green marble top (IMHO), and they were looking for 30k USD for the Commode, on its OWN!
This Suite/Set is SO GOOD that it is the main exhibit in our rear Showroom.
Not marked but under the marble top of the commode there are 2 signatures in pencil (1) M. Le Youters (?) and (2) M. Daneels.
You will NOT find another complete suite/set like this ANYWHERE!
AS A BONUS: We have curated and sourced (recently) a Pair of Monumental French Empire Wall Sconces which are a ‘PERFECT’ match for this bedroom set! (See pics)
