Joichi Hoshi Furniture
Japanese, 1913-1979
Joichi Hoshi was a Japanese printmaker best known for his depictions of trees in centered compositions. The trees are often shown leafless with monochromatic backgrounds, sometimes incorporating gold or silver leaf into the layers of the intricate woodblock process. Born in 1913 in Niigata, Japan, Hoshi began his artistic career after working as an elementary school teacher in Taiwan for several years. He later became a mimeograph printer and started creating his own prints. The artist graduated from the Musashino University of Fine Arts in 1956. Before focusing on his recurring motif of trees in the 1970s, Hoshi depicted galaxies and constellations. He died on June 17, 1979 in Tokyo, Japan. Today, Hoshi’s works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cincinnati Art Museum, among others.(Biography provided by Reeves Art + Design)

This beautiful, limited edition original color woodblock is by the famous
Showa Shin Hanga woodblock master Clifton Karhu (1927-2007).
It bears the original frame and has a label on the back from a Tokyo gallery.
The work is a beautiful impression with rich color. It and the frame are in excellent condition.
The print measures 16 x 16 inches. The frame is 23 ½ x 23 ½ inches.
It is numbered lower left as AP5 - Artist Proof #5 and is pencil signed and dated ‘74 lower right.
An American of Finnish descent, Clifton Karhu was born in Minnesota in 1927. Raised together with his twin brother Raymond, Karhu was the son of painters Arne and Anna Karhu. After his graduation in 1946 he served in the military at an American Navy base in Japan.
Returning to America following his military service in 1950, Karhu enrolled at the Minneapolis School of Art but quit two years later to pursue missionary work as a Lutheran minister.
Karhu left the missionary work in 1958 and chose to move his new family to Gifu City, a small provincial town northwest of Kyoto, Japan where he set about returning to his art. Karhu soon found local success in 1961; obtaining first prize at the Chubu Taiheijo Bijutsu Kyokai Ten (The Middle Pacific Art Group Exhibition) and fixing his first single, professional exhibition at the Shin...

The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images.
One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...
