Mid Century Still Life by Joseph Mellor Hanson, 1956
By Joseph Mellor Hanson
Located in Hudson, NY
Description "Still Life With An Orange" oil on canvas was painted by James Mellor Hanson (1900-1963) in 1956. It is in excellent as found condition and mounted in a wonderful period frame. This was part of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum inventory till 20+ years ago when it became part of a prominent collection in East Hampton New York. The canvas measures: 24" H. by 29" W. The frame's exterior : 31.50" H. by 36.50" W. Hanson was born in Yorkshire, England in 1900. He left England in 1925 for Paris where he studied with Fernand Leger and Andre Andre Lhote and worked with Le Corbusier. He returned to England after 8 years and became part of the circle of artists that formed around Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson. By 1938 he had a Studio in NYC until he joined the art faculty at Cornell University, where he taught until his death in 1963. He exhibited widely at MOMA, Whitney, Art Institute of Chicago and the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburg. This Still Life is considered an example of his mature work, where he has taken his early influences from both Leger and Nicholson and created a style unique unto himself. This painting was kept in the artist's collection until his estate was given to Cornell University's Johnson Museum Of Art. His work is in several museum collections in the United States and England, including The Metropolitan Museum NYC, MoMA, the Nelson-Atkins in Kansas City, the White Museum at Cornell, National Museum Wales, National Museum Cardiff, and Bankfield Museum in Halifax, England, The Hepworth Wakefield, UK Partial exibition list: 1928 – Galerie Mots et Images, Paris 1928-32 – Salon des Independants, Paris 1929 – Galerie Aubier, Paris (group) 1935 – Galerie Jeanne Castel, Paris 1937-38 – Wertheim Gallery, London 1938 – Bankfield Museum, Halifax, England 1941-57 – Passedoit Gallery, New York (8 one-man exhibitions) 1943-50 – Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (group) 1950 – Art Institute of Chicago (group) 1950 – Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio (group) 1953 – Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (group) 1954 – MoMA, New York, 25th Anniv. exhibition (group) 1959 – Corcoran Gallery of Art, D.C. Impressive Mid-Century Still Life Painting by Franz Pricking dated 1955
By Franz Priking
Located in Chicago, IL
Stunning still life of fruit by German artist Franz Priking. Painted primarily in shades of gold, deep green and black and housed in a beautiful frame that has gilded accents, this original work of art is a stunner. Signed and dated in the upper right hand corner "Pricking 1955". There is a label on the reverse side from World House Galleries on Madison Ave in NYC. The label states the artist is French (where he resided at the time this work was painted). Priking was born in Germany and was eleven years old when WWII broke out. It is said that the war influenced him and his art for the rest of his life. Immediately after the war he began to show an affinity for the Expressionist art that was banned by the Nazis. Priking was a student of Max Pechstein by 1948 at the Bauhaus, and by 1952 he had moved to southern France, meeting Picasso at Vallauris. Picasso is said to have strongly encouraged him, saying he would become one of the great artists of the century. He exhibited mostly in Europe but also in Tokyo and Sao Paolo. The artist's use of black (prominent in this work) is said to reflect the darkness of his early years during the war. His work moved through various phases, beginning with Fauvism and Cubism, moving through Expressionism and finally on to abstraction in his final decade. In 1958 he was awarded the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, in 1961 he was elected a member of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in Geneva. He died at barely age 50, cutting short a promising career. In 1990 when Ecole de Paris paintings...

Mid Century Modern Still Life with Jug and Vase by Ramon Prats (1928-2003)
By Ramon Prats, Giorgio Morandi
Located in Garnerville, NY
Ramon Prats (1928-2003) vase and jug still life oil paint on masonite. Circa 1971. Signed and dated lower right, Prats, '71. A peaceful rendering and reminiscent of Morandi's solitary still life paintings. Prats' stippling effect with the brush or palette knife has created a beautifully tactile and textured painting. Light and dark contrast of the violet cylinder next to the curvaceous jug. A wonderful piece. the framing treatment consists of a simple flat black wood profile molding. The piece is in good overall condition with minor losses around the corners and edges of the work. No other major paint losses. No visible crazing, water damage or restorations. Some scuffs, dings and losses to the black frame. Wear consistent with age. Approximate overall dimensions with frame are 1.5" deep x 16" wide x 24.75" high. The approximate measurements of the actual work on masonite are 15.63" wide x 24.25" high. Bio from AskArt: Ramon Prats Born: 1928 - Spain Died: 2003 - Mexico Known for: Abstract mixed-media explosion theme, still life paintings Biography from Waddington's Spanish-born Ramón Prats was appointed as the official artist and illustrator for "El País" newspaper in Havana, Cuba when he was 15 years old. He regularly exhibited at the Associated American Artists (AAA) Gallery until 1955 and also at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Prats moved to Mexico in 1956 and was pivotal in spearheading the development of modern art there until his death at age 74. Biography from Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum Ramon Prats (American, b.
