A Pair of Framed 19th Century Colored Lithographs of Tudor Scenes by Joseph Nash
By Joseph Nash
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a pair of framed 19th century tinted lithographs with hand-coloring entitled "Gallery Over the Hall, Knowle, Kent" and "Terrace Bramshill, Hants" by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) after drawings by Joseph Nash (1809-1878), from "Mansions of England in the Olden Time", published in London in 1839-1849. Nash's publication consists of a series of views of Tudor domestic architecture, which Nash said depicted "the most characteristic features of the domestic architecture of the Tudor Age, and also illustrating the costumes, habits, and recreations of our ancestors." The scenes of the aristocratic ladies and gentlemen (including Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I), who are depicted inhabiting the rooms of these great houses, were taken directly from the portraits on the walls.
Charles Joseph Hullmandel, was involved in the creation of these lithographs. He was a famous British lithographer, who invented the "lithotint" process, which he named and patented in 1840. This technique, allowing for greater nuance and value gradation than pure lithography, was an ideal means of expression for Nash's historically rich and picturesque depictions of Tudor mansions and their inhabitants. Hullmandel is also remembered for creating many lithographs from the paintings by J. M. W. Turner.
The "Gallery Over the Hall" depicts a great hall with children playing with skittles (wooden pins resembling bowling pins), a doll and what looks to be a St Charles spaniel, while a lady in Tudor attire watches over them next to a massive stone fireplace. Adults are watching from in the distance while a man bows...

John Taylor Arms was born in Washington, DC in 1887. He studied law at Princeton University, transferring to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, to study architecture, graduating in 1912. After serving as an officer in the United States Navy during World War I, he devoted himself full-time to etching. He published his first original etchings in 1919.
His initial subject was the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City near which he worked. Arms developed a successful career as a graphic artist in the 1920s and 1930s, specializing in series of etchings of Gothic churches and cathedrals in France and Italy. In addition to medieval subjects, Arms made a series of prints of American cities.
He used sewing needles and magnifying glasses to get a fine level of detail. A member of many printmaking societies, Arms served as president of the Society of American Graphic Artists. An educator, Arms wrote the Handbook of Print Making and Print Makers (1934) and did numerous demonstrations and lectures. Arms was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member in 1930, and became a full member in 1933. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics...

Staircase, Wakehurst, Sussex
By Joseph Nash
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
An original hand-colored lithograph after a painting by English artist Joseph Nash (1809-1878) titled "Staircase, Wakehurst, Sussex", 1839. Lithography executed by English artist Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) who introduced lithography into England. Mounted on light board within a gilt ruled border as issued. Hand pencil titled lower left. First folio edition. Portfolio: Joseph Nash's 'The Mansions of England in the Olden Time', published in London, England, 1839. Provenance: single collection of recently deceased James E. Horigan who lived in England and owned a gallery and later moved to Colorado. Reference: Tooley - 'English Books with Coloured Plates' No. 337. Board size: 14" x 17". Image size: 11.25" x 14.25". Some wave to board, some light toning and foxing at outer white margins associated with age. In overall good condition.
Nash (1809-1878) subtitled this formidable work on Tudor (16th-century) domestic architecture as “depicting the most characteristic features of the domestic architecture of the Tudor Age, and also illustrating the costumes, habits, and recreations of our ancestors.” Nash was a draughtsman and lithographer of architectural views, trained by A. C. Pugin. He preferred a freer, more atmospheric style to that of his mentor. Here Nash was a perfect partner for C. J. Hullmandel, the famous British lithographer...
