Kono Bairei Art

Japanese, 1844-1895

Kono Bairei was a Japanese painter, art teacher and book illustrator. He was born on March 3rd, 1844, in Kyoto, Japan. He was a member of the Ukiyo-e school of painting and became a master for Kacho-e or the depiction of birds and flowers. One characteristic of Bairei’s art is the Western-style realism that he added to his pieces, making his work very important in determining what the wildlife of Japan was like at that time. Many of his works were published in books, usually classified by the type of animals he was painting.

Traditional woodblock printing enhances the beauty of each work. The artist must carve different woodblocks for every color he wishes to transfer to paper. In this style of printing it is imperative that the register of each woodblock be exact as they must match perfectly to create an image without blurring. In addition to his illustrated flower books...

We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading. What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...
