Pair Streamline Modern Chests by Leo Jiranek
By Leo Jiranek, Donald Deskey
Located in Hanover, MA
Pair of 1938 vintage American Modern streamline art deco chests of drawers designed by Leo Jiranek and possibly manufactured by J.B. Van Sciver Co. of Camden, NJ. Unsigned.
The design is bookended as each chest has a corresponding rounded vertical corner with waterfall edge, four drawers with chrome backplates and elongated lacquered horizontal pulls aligned to convey the Art Deco dynamics of speed and forward motion.
So strong is the design that it is not necessary to place them side by side. They speak to one another from across a room and would make great bedside chests as well.
The tops, horizontal pulls and base are lacquered black and have been freshly restored.
The primavera wood cases and drawer faces have a highly polished and figural grained veneer.
Drawers are clean and open and close as they ought.
This specific design is often attributed to Donald Deskey which is understandable since Jiranek and Deskey were close associates and together in 1934 they formed AMODEC, Inc. for the manufacture and promotion of their own modern furniture designs.
LEO A. JIRANEK (b. 1900 d. 1990) was known as the ''Dean of Furniture Designers," one of the Industry's first, and unrepentant freelancers, who enjoyed 67 years in the business. He studied engineering at Princeton University where he graduated in 1922. Throughout his career, Jiranek contributed to more furniture companies than any other known designer, among them Magnavox, Thomasville, Ethan Allen, Kroehler, Heywood Wakefield, The Lane Co...

Monumental Rosewood Sideboard Cabinet with Brass and Rose Lucite Pulls, c 1930s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This stunning and exquisite sideboard cabinet was expertly crafted from Rosewood with brass and rose lucite center cabinet pulls. This monumentally sized cabinet was clearly an important piece as its craftsmanship and materials are first-class. The rippled Rosewood cabinet doors and rose tinted lucite pulls are ahead of its time. Refinished in a French Polish which accentuates the exotic Rosewood grain and protects the surface against regular daily use.
The features on this eye-catcher are quite comprehensive. Let's start with the most obvious: incredible book-matched Rosewood across the top, front center doors and running along the base and side cabinet doors. Such wild attention to detail creating a stunning visual effect. Now let's pay attention to the more subtle details such as the rippled corners - there are actually concealed compartment doors somewhat hidden in those ripples. The center door pulls are also superb - the center plates in lightly patinated brass and the handles in rose colored lucite with gently beveled edges. Four keys are included with the cabinet, as seen in photos.
While we are confident that this cabinet was designed by someone important and for an important client, we are unsure of the maker at this time. It was previously attributed to Louis Majorelle however we are uncertain of that so we are not listing it as such. Rosewood with this exotic of grain combined with high quality interiors and hardware, plus the use of rose colored lucite pulls is a sign that this was not just any run of the mill piece but something with plenty of thought and care devised into its creation.

Art Deco Bedroom Suite, Leo Jiranek Streamline Design, Fit for a Queen
By Leo Jiranek
Located in Oakland, CA
American Art Deco modernist streamline bedroom suite by Leo Jiranek has been recently restored and refreshed. This stunning five piece suite, with multiple wood veneers, outrageous metal hardware and wonderful mirrors consists of a tall dresser (referred to as “high boy”), a vanity with matching stool, a nightstand along with a bed frame adapted to fit a queen size bed. The matching round mirrors with an unusual etched treatment on both the vanity and dresser have an asymmetrical design.
Each drawer has its own “Streamline Design” label and very modernistic style aluminum handles with black bakelite details. There are rounded edges on the drawer designs on the outside and clean wood interiors. The vanity is a showstopper, with its blue glass and cobalt mirror and there is even a working electric deco clock...
