Liceu de Artes e Ofícios Rocking Chairs

Brazilian

In 1873, a group of wealthy coffee merchants established the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios with the stated aim of supporting future industrialization efforts in Brazil. Seven years later, it became a fully integrated school. For over a century, it has trained the public in fields of agriculture, industry, trade, crafts, the arts and design, including furniture design, leading to the production of incredibly rare student-designed pieces still sought after today.

Borrowing its model from similar European institutions, the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios built upon methods and curricula popular at the time to instruct and train economically disadvantaged locals. In the hopes of making Brazil’s industries more competitive, the school involved eminent volunteers, including two of its directors, Brazilian architects Bettencourt da Silva and Ramos de Azevedo. At times, the school used its own exceptionally talented students as teachers when volunteers were scarce.

The Sociedade Propagadora das Belas Artes maintained the school in a building designed by Ramos in São Paulo. Ramos’s work also included notable buildings such as the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo and the Palácio das Indústrias. The school has provided furnishings for a range of hotels, like the Manaus Tropical Hotel, as well as the Cumbica International Airport.

Vladimir Kagan 'Rock Star' Pair of Leather Rocking Chairs, c. 1997, Signed
By Vladimir Kagan, American Leather
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This pair of black leather rocking armchairs are by Vladimir Kagan for the Kagan Collection, by American Leather (previously LeatherTech). Designed in circa 1997 and called the 'Rock Star' lounge chair due to its rocking chair abilities cleverly disguised underneath with hidden wooden runners and signature rounded form, the curved arms and integrated seat cushion gives the look of a molded chair. What's a huge upside about these examples are that they have LeatherTech labels underneath instead of the common and newer American Leather labels. In the 1990s the company was originally founded as LeatherTech and brought huge innovations into the furniture and design industry. Later, in the early 2000's they changed their name to American Leather. Earlier examples made prior to the name change such as this pair are sought-after by collectors and generally carry greater worth. With Postmodern soaring in popularity, this club chair is just as relevant today as it was when it was first introduced. An excellent choice for designers and collectors alike, the chair and ottoman are signed underneath with The Kagan collection labels and leather swatch...

Available today, this one-of-a-kind Mid-Century Modern armchair set in Hardwood & Beige Leather designed by Liceu de Artes e Oficios, in the sixties is nothing less than spectacular. The delicate armchairs are made in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, and re-upholstered in beige leather. The Canoa (canoe) model was inspired by the Brazilian canoes used in the Amazon. This can be seen in the armchair arms that resemble a canoe handle. The woodwork is spectacular and can be seen throughout the piece but mostly in the arms and legs. The old Jacaranda has colorful veins showcasing the age of the piece as well as levity in its design. The Italian leather is smooth, and the armchairs are not only beautiful but very comfortable.
