Pat Hobaugh Art

American, b. 1978
Pat Hobaugh grew up on a small farm in rural Indiana. He never took an art class or touched a paintbrush until his senior year in college when he took an Art History course that changed his life. He fell in love with the Old Masters and started to teach himself to paint. After several years of self-education, he went back to school to earn a Bachelors and Masters in painting from the Uni- versity of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively. Now he is represented in galleries across the country and has work in collections around the world. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Pat Hobaugh works in a style that reflects the examination of pop culture fused with the tradition of Dutch still life painting. His fascination with objects (action figures, toys, miscellaneous foods) comes from his anthropological mindset that questions what these objects say about us as a cul- ture. Having dubbed his particular practice of painting our pop culture icons in object form “Stuf- fology,” Hobaugh explores the significance of materiality and “playtime” in the modern world and infuses it with matured satirical wit and a childlike playfulness. Hobaugh also considers the effects from one generation to the next in his paintings, since he uses icons that may be removed from the current pop culture context. In doing this, he alludes to a shift in understanding of young and old. These objects are still toys, a tribute to our youth, though they might not be considered “current.” Though the acknowledgement of lost youth can be overwhelm- ing, Hobaugh conveys gratitude and hopefulness of his youth and of today’s youth by mixing the pop culture figures. Hobaugh says of his works, “My still life work is a quest in exploring and exploding the traditional idea of the representational still life. These paintings began as an examination of the cultural indoc- trination and development of early adolescent children via toy action figures... Overall, they serve as a window into the world where a child’s mythos of heroes and villains are formed. Recently, the still lifes have expanded to include an examination and comparison of themes from past and pres- ent popular culture, such as sugary snacks and breakfast cereals.”

America Had Talent
By Pat Hobaugh
Located in Atlanta, GA
This painting is in excellent condition and has only been shown in a gallery setting. From the artist: "This work depicts a Presidential talent show, with Bill Clinton receiving his scores for his saxophone judges, while Hillary (as a nutcracker) stands looking like a judge as well. The painting is really about two things. First, how we turn politics and campaigns into talent show contests, with the media/television personalities standing in as judges before we even get to the actual election. Secondly, it's called "America had Talent" because we always think past presidents were better than current ones. The Greek vase in the center is a reminder that none of this is new, this type of treatment of leaders and elections has been going on for millennia- (Judgement of Paris). And the hydrangeas, as with all of the hydrangeas in my work, represent the transience of the situation depicted when placed in relevance to overall time. " Pat Hobaugh...

Symphony in White
By Pat Hobaugh
Located in Atlanta, GA
This painting is in excellent condition and has only been shown in a gallery setting. From the artist:" Sweet Symphony in Whites is inspired by James McNeill Whistler’s three symphony in white paintings. My paintings, like Whistler’s, have multiple layers of meaning. One is the use of a single color and its relative tones as the end intention of the work. By doing this with representational subject matter, the painting is attempting to bridge the modernist aesthetic of ‘art for art’s sake’ with traditional realism. On another level, as Whistler’s paintings have been interpreted as a loss of innocence, so too do mine deal with this loss. There is the loss of innocence in Art from its classical representation in the form of the Venus de Milo to its scientific study in the form of Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man to its final manifestation as a commercial product/celebrity in the form of Andy Warhol and Elvis. Furthermore, there is the loss of innocence of the artist himself in the form of the action figure toys and sweets he had as a kid to play with and eat but now which are used as metaphors and painting subjects. Furthermore, the hydrangea, as in all my work, symbolizes the ephemerality of life." Pat Hobaugh...

Street Fight
By Pat Hobaugh
Located in Atlanta, GA
This painting has only been shown in a gallery setting. It is painted on a thick board, but the edges are not painted. It can be hung as is or framed. From the artist, " I'm using Sesame Street and Muppet characters as metaphors for the internal struggle of 'growing up'. The David painting is not only a parallel of the conflict but it's also the key to understanding the deeper meaning of the main composition." Within this painting, Hobaugh includes the 1799 painting "The Intervention of the Sabine Women" by Jaques-Louis David where Hersilia, leader of the Sabines, intervenes between her father and husband by placing her babies between them. One possible interpretation is that love prevails over all, big bird is our modern day Hersilia. Pat Hobaugh...

Artist Comments
Artist John McCabe creates three colorful guitars lined in a row. "This was made originally as a promotional poster for a series of acoustic guitar performances that I was doing in Orange County, CA," shares John. The piece pays homage to Buck Owens' red, white, and blue guitar, Emmylou Harris' Gibson J-200, and Don Rich's acoustic Fender.

American Flag OUR FLAG Pop Art Acrylic Painting
By Martin Hoffman
Located in Surfside, FL
signed with initials verso and a stamp Kooter Boogers of America. with an intentionally distressed surface. please see photos. Martin Hoffman, a prominent artist whose work in the 1970s was simultaneously identified with high art (gritty realist paintings sold through the O.K. Harris Gallery in New York) and low (illustrations for Playboy magazine). Throughout his career, his style ranged from energetic abstraction and hard-edge pop to photo-based realism and minimalism. In recent years, he created a series of autobiographical paintings in a winsome, cartoon-like style. He also did a series of subtly hued works in which inscrutable words half-disappear into the paint in which they are inscribed. Hoffman’s first job out of college was as art director for the Miami News, a position that he held from 1956 until 1962. Afterward he worked as a graphic designer in Miami while making paintings at home in his spare time. His earliest paintings (which were done, he said, as a “testosterone-driven teenager”) were executed in automotive lacquer on 4 x 8 foot sheets of builder’s hardboard. They combined glossy, visceral surfaces and metallic paints with collaged-on metal shapes and mirrors. In the 1960s, Hoffman’s paintings began to incorporate figures and symbolism with erotic undertones. Through a mutual friend, Sidney Janis saw Hoffman’s paintings and selected one of them for his international “Erotic Art ‘66” exhibition at Sidney Janis Gallery in New York. Others in the show included Pop Art icons Jim Dine, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist and Tom Wesselman. Hoffman’s painting hung besides an Andy Warhol silkscreen painting of a partially peeled banana. From 1966 to 1992, Hoffman was a freelance Playboy illustrator. He called those years “a wonderful period – it supported my family.” Hoffman painted a series of nudes titled “Woman Eternal” which was featured in Playboy’s December 1972 issue. Through the years, he also created illustrations for books, record albums, movie posters and print ads. Clients included Pfizer, Caesar’s Palace, Harley Davidson Motorcycles and the NASA Art Program, which commissioned a series of works based on activities at the former Kennedy Space Center...
