6 Piece Glass Mosaic Tile Coffee Table Genaro Alvarez Cosmic, Mexico, 1950s
By Genaro Alvarez
Located in Camden, ME
Six Piece Studio Mosaic table by Genaro Alvarez composed of. Intricate inlaid glass mosaic designs based on 6 zodiac constellations, on six triangular, interchangeable mahogany bases created at the Genaro Alvarez's Studio in Mexico City in the 1950s.
Alvarez studied under artists Carlos Ruano Llopis and Diego Rivera.
Employing a style he called symbolic expressionism.Alvarez was commissioned to do large murals in Mexico as well as a major commissions in Chicago, Kansas City and other cities in the United States. He did murals in private men's clubs along the the California Coast.
This table's mosaic is composed of a variety of glass tile with the most dramatic being silver mirror glass tile outlines of the zodiac and outlines of stars floating within an earth toned background of dark mocha, sienna, ochre, crème and white Terrazzo with traditional Aztec symbols of Navajo red tile with random red tile pieces all add to this sophisticated design work.
Each of the six triangular tables is edged in polished brass with brass legs measuring 23.5 by 23.5 by 23.5 inches.
I have photographed the table in a variety of configurations and as a stacked grouping.
It is intentionally modular, stackable and very versatile in its design.
From Don Shoemaker dot com. "One artist that was recognized for his mosaic furniture creations is Genaro Alvarez. The Genaro Alvarez Studio, (located in Mexico City) was known for its mosaic work in murals and floor designs as well as decorative furnishings such as lamps, trays and furniture using various types of natural rocks...

Genaro Alvarez Mosaic Panel Agave Landscape Clothes Washers Mexico, circa 1955
By Genaro Alvarez
Located in Camden, ME
A Genaro Alvarez midcentury mosaic panel depicting a group of village women washing clothes on a riverbank framed within an oversized Agave plant.
Agave has a long religious and cultural place in Mexico's belief history dating from the Aztec's goddess of Agave Mayheul who represented long life and health, dancing and fertility.
Genaro Alvarez has a spiritual side within his compositions.
This mosaic is a combination of a mundane chore of washing the clothes and the energy released from Agave as viewed by the Aztecs on thru Mexican religious...

Leroy Setziol Carved Wall Sculpture 1963
By Leroy Setziol
Located in Camden, ME
A large Leroy Setziol wall sculpture commissioned by the United States National Bank of Portland Oregon in 1963 as part of their commitment to the support of the regional art community .
The following is taken from the Portland Art Museum's profile of Leroy Setziol for their exhibit in 2015-16 celebrating the 100th year anniversary of his birth
"Leroy Setziol" Sept 5, 2015 – Oct 30, 2016
"A composer in wood, Leroy Setziol created lyrical sculpture that honors the beauty of a material strongly identified with the Northwest. The black walnut, teak, fir, and other woods he employed enhanced his complex gridded compositions, bringing them to life. A self-taught, intuitive worker, Setziol visualized his complex carvings using the grid as an armature to frame imaginative shapes. Throughout his career, his sculpture ranged from intimate works to large-scale public commissions. The largest work on display is an elegant, teak, two-panel wall relief from 1991. Twenty-three works are on view, including free-standing sculpture, totems, and a variety of wall reliefs.
Setziol’s sculpture gained greater recognition with Portland’s architectural community in 1964 when he was invited by Northwest Regionalist architect John Storrs to carve a series of large-scale relief panels for Salishan Lodge in Gleneden Beach...

Alice in Wonderland Rug by Salvador Dalí from Ege Axminster A/S, Denmark, 1977
By (after) Salvador Dali, Ege Axminster A/S
Located in Camden, ME
A modernist wool rya rug by Ege Axminster A/S created in Denmark to the highest standards. The image is based on a Salvador Dali (1904-1989) painting of 1969 interpreting Lewis Carroll's classic story of Alice in Wonderland. Depicting Alice jumping rope in a long fluttering Empire style high waisted dress with her head and hands represented as floral bouquets with her magical jump-rope and her symbolic shadow figure next to her.
The dark grid lines on the ivory field creates an impression of vast space to the mountains in the distance.

Vittorio Dassi Sideboard Hexagon Glass Shelves La Permanente Mobili Cantu 1950s
By Vittorio Dassi, La Permanente Mobili Cantù
Located in Camden, ME
A very rare and sophisticated sideboard by Vittorio Dassi stamped Permanente Mobili Cantu Italy from the 1950s consisting of four suspended cabinets, three of which have locking doors, the fourth has drawers with raised hexagonal pulls.
Each cabinet has a chamfered top of a beautifully grained Italian walnut shaped in a distinctive diamond cut.
This contrasts with more tightly grained fronts and side panels of the cabinets
Above each cabinet is set a hexagonal glass shelf resting inset on brass supports detailed in a flat black lacquer and polished brass attached to the ends of tapering flat pillars of Italian walnut.
The interiors of three of the four cabinets are finished in an aged off-white glazed birch with adjustable glass shelving.
There are ten polished threaded bronze discs that are held in cast bronze hexagonal housings that allow the sideboard to adjust to uneven or stone flooring.
The bronze bases are also accented in flat black lacquer.
La Permanente Mobili Cantu was considered one of Italy's top cabinet makers and the cabinet work in this sideboard attests to how beautifully they executed their pieces.
The metric measurements...

Rare Warren McArthur Arizona Biltmore Era Lounge Chair and Ottoman C. 1931
By Warren McArthur Corporation, Warren McArthur
Located in Camden, ME
A wonderful Warren McArthur club chair and ottoman that personify the comfort of his furniture.
Warren's patented compression assembly was designed to provide flexibility in the frame to add more comfort via a slight flex in addition to the cushions.
The aluminum strap back added to this flexibility in contrast to the rigid welded steel tube frame that was the standard of McArthur's contemporaries.
This club chair and ottoman were manufactured at the Warren McArthur Furniture Company in Los Angeles between 1931/33.
The chair's design, while similar in overall look, predates Warren McArthur's classic Park Avenue Lounge (Style No. 1003 EAU p. 9 of his 1936 corporation catalog) by at least two years.
This is the only example of this chair that I have seen.
The pair was said to have come from the Arizona Biltmore but I cannot confirm that provenance.
The absence of labels is typical of all Arizona Biltmore furniture...

Warren McArthur Rolling Bar Cart Rome Ny C, 1933/34
By Warren McArthur Corporation, Warren McArthur
Located in Camden, ME
A Warren McArthur modernist rolling bar cart manufactured during the first years Warren was located in Rome, New York.
The Warren McArthur Corporation moved from Los Angeles to Rome, New York in January of 1933.
The label ending in "PATS APPLIED FOR" identifies the bar as being manufactured in Rome between 1933/34.
The use of square half inch tubing for the rails bordering the shelves and the staggered count of one, two or three tubes is a well considered contrast to the one inch round tubing that comprises the main body of the bar frame.
The inch and half rectangular U tube that forms the foundation tube of the bar cart gives the necessary strength as well as a strong rectilinear visual that lends a visual balance with the half inch rectangular tubing.
The spacing of the three half round shelves...
